Blij dat ik niet vooraf ben komen lezen naar adviezen als "skip deze shit", want als ik één ding meen dat een film niet hoeft te hebben, is het de kijker bij het handje nemen en alles verklaren van A tot Z en liefst met happy end zodat ze met voldaan gevoel de volgende hapklare brok kunnen verorberen.

Als deze film één ding blijkt te doen, is het verdelen in kampen... je houdt er wel enigszins van of je vindt het totale bagger. Helaas komt zulke film zo nooit boven het gemiddelde uit, maar so be it. Ieder z'n smaak en ding, maar verdorie dit was rauw en realistisch en a real badass-killer.

Ik heb me speciaal voor deze film een account gemaakt op deze site, want wil hier wel wat dingen over kwijt.

Aangezien de film op 17 januari Netflix zou verlaten deze bekeken nadat ik hem enkele maanden geleden aan m'n lijstje had toegevoegd. Het onderwerp spreekt me aan aangezien ik zelf op jonge leeftijd in de schaakwereld actief was, ook een privé-coach had, na vele jaren het schaken weer opnam, enz...

Nu was deze film nog geen 20 minuten ver of ik zag de jonge hoofdrolspeler ostentatief zijn witte dame vol genoegen van 'ik heb je' neerploffen en zijn volwassen tegenstander vol ongeloof en in schaamte zijn witte koning ter overgave omver gooien. Hoe kan je zo een filmblunder over het hoofd zien? Zowel winnaar als verliezer kan niet met dezelfde kleur spelen, toch? Er zaten schaaktechnisch nog wel wat foutjes in hier en daar, al heb je dat helaas in de meeste films rond schaken. Wat ik niet begrijpen kan. Een film over zo'n onderwerp hoort toch met passie voor het spel te worden gemaakt? Dat lijkt hier alleszins verre van het geval.

Het overdreven typisch Amerikaans melige neemt in deze film het voortouw, met bewieroking van hun boegbeeld bij uitstek Bobby Fischer voorop (vooral grote held omdat hij als zowat enige en als Amerikaan de toenmalige Sovjet-hegemonie in het schaken een hak kon zetten en zo mee een cultheld werd in Koude Oorlog tijdperk). Er zitten ook tal van elementen in die ver staan van hoe het werkelijk in deze wereld gaat. En dat stoort. Evenals hoe het park-schaken geromantiseerd wordt en de coaching toch wel zwaar overgedramatiseerd. Wat de film voor mij nog redt van de ultieme ondergang is dat er wel vrij aardig in geacteerd wordt en het algemene verhaal niet helemaal de mist in gaat. Maar wat een gemiste kans om ook de kenners mee te krijgen voor en in zo'n film...
