I've known this movie for a very long time, but strangely enough I had never seen it until last night and I was quite surprised by the level. Starts out a bit like an adolescent movie but it gets better and rawer and almost to horror-like scenes. More of a mysterious occult film than horror and yes there is absolutely no comedy here. Or it must be that bus driver who says watch out for the creeps to which the strong Fairuza Balk says that we are ourselves! LOL

Funny thing is that the 3 'witches' are experimenting a bit more primitively, and that changes with the 4th witch who is actually the most normal of the quartet. You would think more of Demi Moore. Her input changes everything in the life of witchcraft where Fairuza Balk is the only one with much insider knowledge outside of the film.

The structure of the Craft is the best part of the film and the many extraordinary sessions such as the hovering. No green backgrounds here as with the beetles rats and 2700 snakes! No fake so very special! I also thought the many layers of the 4 protagonists were beautifully portrayed.

All players have already released a lot of movies, some of which are very well-known such as the Scream series American History and Vertical Limit.

Movie 4.0

Blu-ray image 3.5

Sound Soundtrack 4.5

Extras 4.0

setback.

I was looking forward to The Craft, even though the subject of witchcraft doesn't interest me very much. These kinds of movies are often the projects that are very popular with a certain audience, and I thought I was one of them myself. Unfortunately, I was wrong, because this film didn't appeal to me as much as I expected.

It actually goes wrong with the acting. The four ladies are well-known characters and all are given enough background and quirkiness to be remembered. Still, this team does not deliver the best acting, and that is thanks to the second half of the film that no longer has good dialogues and throws a lot of build-up from the first half overboard.

Visually a bit sparse, despite experimenting with effects. Some parts are quite successful, and the playful scenes of witchcraft turn out nice during the finale. They did what they could with the resources they had, and that pays off some benefit. I especially thought it was a shame that the build-up to a good story was blown over during the second half.

Instead, in the second half, you get a movie that's still entertaining, but as basic as your average Hollywood movie from Bay. The acting doesn't get better, but just how the film is finished, I thought it was a shame. What's good is that the film has motifs built up that fill in some of the gaps in the second half and save it from a complete mess.

In short, The Craft was a disappointment from which I expected a more playful, cooler and stronger film. In the end I got a movie that was headed for something good, had good variety and had a nice concept, but changed as the second half started. Still, I'm curious about Legacy, although I expect even less from it now.

An entertaining and campy pulp movie, but overall not good enough to give it a pass. The film never seems to know exactly which way it wants to go, and the tone and atmosphere setting is also incredibly unstable. One moment The Craft seems to be embracing the absurdity, the next moment the events are approached in a serious way. It doesn't matter to me that the plot is not original, but it is a pity that hardly anything cool or interesting is done with the whole witch theme and the mythos around it. A big plus is the fine cast. The four ladies act well, and above all have a nice presence. A young Neve Campbell is always a plus, but especially lead actress Robin Tunney knows how to attract attention. Such a typical 'late 90s cast', but it certainly fits here. 2.5*.
