I had tried to watch this movie before a few years ago but turned it off after about 20 minutes. After last night I already know why. What a drama, literally and figuratively, this film.

Within 5 minutes, the single mother has lost her only son, after which she leaves for Barcelona to find her son's lost father. Then we enter a world of transvestites, theater and drug addict. The mother befriends a lesbian actress with a jealous heroin-addicted girlfriend and a nun. Surprise, this nun turns out to be pregnant, but not ordinary, no she is also pregnant by a transvestite! Oh, yes, her parents don't want much to do with the sweet child either, so Florence Nightingale takes care of her.

At this point in the movie I thought, if she's also HIV positive now I'll take another half point off. And, yes of course HIV-positive. Very dramatic intended, but I laughed enormously!

The misery ripples through until the end, but my attention was already so weak that I had to make an effort to stay awake a bit. Unlike 3/4 of the characters in the film, I did make it to the end. This ending suddenly turned out to be very happy. But honestly, it all didn't matter to me anymore.

No, definitely not my movie this. This "over the top" Spanish drama didn't bother me much. I was never caught anywhere. The movie was laughable at first and then boring. Sorry for the fans, but more than 1* for the music and the sometimes beautiful pictures I can't say about this.

Described by some media outlets as Almodovar's best film. That seems like a bridge too far for me. This does not come close to, for example, Hable con Ella. Todo sobre Mi Madre is an ode to women. The woman is central in the film, along with a number of transsexuals. I found the first part quite interesting, but as the film progressed it could hardly get me excited. The casting and cinematography were okay, but the rest of the film didn't do much for me.

I thought the plot was a bit too much of a good thing. The drama that happens to the son was more than enough to build a film around. Almodovar's decided otherwise (rightly so, as it turns out he won prizes), but not for me.

Meh.

In the meantime more than 2000 votes and yet this one is my first by Pedro Almodóvar. So it was high time I saw something of him.

However, I find this melodramatic tragicomedy a bit poor. Visually pleasing, with bright yet warm colors that often contrast in stage-like decors. So it doesn't look boring at all. Soundtrack is also okay, without further ado.

But that's it. Content-wise, it's a bit choppy, without a single plot being really interesting. There's quite a lot of soap-like drama in it, and it's just that there is still some modest laughter every now and then, or it would have even become a tough drama.

Not the most successful acquaintance with a director I should have seen a long time ago. Anyway, his body of work seems extensive enough to discover other films.

2.5
