Amores Perros might as well have been called Hogar or Familia, because it's a soap opera. A Mexican soap opera, but a soap opera. Different storylines about the daily lives of some people intersect, and of course they are full of misery: extramarital affairs, domestic violence, unwanted pregnancies, broken family ties, dogs disappearing... Boys, boys, it doesn't stop. The low point is the part with the man who leaves his wife to start something with a top model, who of course turns out to be a huge bitch. And all supported by the same annoying tunes over and over. Gael García Bernal plays his role phenomenally and the vagabond El Chivo is also unparalleled, but for the rest this is a litany of clichés and melodramatic entanglements that goes on far too long.

Innaritu's debut was an immediate hit. Intriguing film in which 3 different characters intersect. And that in life-threatening circumstances, in which the third protagonist of the film steals the first one's money.

Every story is unique, just as every life is unique. There are many memorable scenes in the film. Sometimes the images are not pleasant, but to my knowledge no dogs are bitten to death in the image. Perhaps a bit of a shame is that the same music kept coming back. The film is also an open ending because you don't know how anyone will go on in his/her life. But each story is finished in such a way that it is a complete conclusion to everyone's personal story.

The actors are not known to me, but they play very well. Recommended if you can tolerate animal cruelty.

Good.

But I didn't think it was brilliant, nevertheless the best of the trilogy directed by Iñárritu. As a director he has managed to find a nice balance in combining strong stories with an attractive visual look. He also knows very well how to maximize the attention, opening directly with an intense scene.

With Amores Perros we again follow a number of people who all run into misfortune and hope, in which dogs also form a central theme. Not that hard to guess, because "Dog Love" is the title of the movie, after all. So as soon as dogs show up, it seems obvious to me that there is a deep message present, and it is neatly processed.

Unfortunately, the film never rises above the level of the first hour. Found the story surrounding the boys by far the most intriguing part. That is where most of the attention seems to go, because the other stories seem to be mainly additions. Not nearly as well developed as the first story, and that was a shame because a lot of potential is used in the first hour.

In terms of styling, it should be your thing. Cutting, pasting and mounting is done quickly. Iñárritu cleverly manages to increase the pressure and tension very early in the story. Subsequently, the fairly raw and clunky style of the film also manages to captivate, although it mainly has an effect on the first story, which is set up a lot darker than the other stories.

Nice that they touch each other, but mixing the stories will not have taken too much time I'm afraid. Nevertheless, it was a captivating film whose long running time is only felt a few times. Some impressive images and a catchy style, Iñárritu knows very well what he is doing and goes for it. I like to see it, but I don't think it's a masterpiece.
