Greenland 2: Migration plot

"Hope is uncharted territory."

It's been a year since Comet Clarke turned the world upside down by destroying most of the planet. John Garrity and his wife and child have reached their bunker in Greenland, but are now forced to leave the safety of the heavily fortified defense position. They decide to cross the devastated, frozen wasteland of Europa to find a new home.

A mediocre film in which the family is forced to leave their safe bunker after years. This sequel to the disaster film is set in a post-apocalyptic world. It's not original in any way, and it's all been seen before. It's also rather implausible in many respects. However, it doesn't become tedious, as it's presented with a fairly adventurous style and plenty of action.

A somewhat uncontrolled, yet highly entertaining action sequel in which director Ric Roman Waugh significantly ramps up the pace of events. In Migration, there's something major happening practically every fifteen minutes, from meteor showers to wars to tsunamis. There's much more going on than in its predecessor, which doesn't necessarily make for a more exciting, but certainly a smoother viewing experience. There's not much time for drama; it's therefore a shame that Waugh keeps harping on about it, leaving a messy impression. The effects aren't particularly convincing either, but emotionally, the whole thing is over quickly, and for that, I personally prefer it to the first chapter.

I found Greenland to be a surprisingly strong action film, especially because the focus was on the human element and the film remained relatively realistic and small-scale. I also have a soft spot for Butler, whose colorless nature makes him perfectly suited for such roles and who brings just that little bit extra. He's certainly likable.

Now, this sequel (at the end, I was reminded of Flatfootsearching for the green valley) certainly wasn't bad, but it did fall a few notches short. The part about crossing The Channel went too far, but anyway, it leaned more towards cinema than realism.

A cool worldview of Earth five years after the storm impact, but also how people are trying to survive. It's not always consistent or believable; cities in Sydney and Mexico have been wiped out, but in France, near the crater, much remains standing. 3.0*.
