Passenger 57 plot

"He's an ex-cop with a bad mouth, a bad attitude, and a bad seat. For the terrorists on flight 163 . . . he's very bad news."

Flying is safe, says the FFA. But then they don't know passenger Charles Rane yet. Because if this super-terrorist plans his fifth attack, a safe flight for the passengers of flight 163 is as good as out of the question. Fortunately, someone else is traveling with them: the passenger of seat 57, undercover security expert John Cutter. During his bathroom visit, Rane has hijacked the plane and Cutter knows what to do; go or go.

The umpteenth film about a plane that is hijacked by a terrorist and certainly not the best of its kind.

The scenario isn't too strong, but as long as the action is good, that shouldn't always be a problem. The action is adequate, not bad, but not so good that you're on the edge of your seat. It's not nearly exciting enough for that. The problem, however, is Wesley Snipes, who as the hero here clearly lacks the aura to create a strong main character. There really isn't much going on with him. Bruce Payne, on the other hand, is a lot better as the villain. Despite his somewhat stereotypical role, his somewhat exaggerated playing succeeds in providing Passenger 57 with much-needed humor.

Passenger 57 is not very strong and also not very original. A Die Hard 2, for example, is a much better movie in the genre.

“The two agents you killed on the plane were friends of mine.”

“Thank you for telling me. I do enjoy knowing the people whose lives I've touched.”

Old-fashioned action film that sells itself short due to a lack of suspense and a mediocre script. Had the entire film taken place on the plane and you are guaranteed to be tense, but the director chooses to have the long last part take place at an airport. The tension, which was there in the plane, has disappeared so quickly. Even the inspired play of Snipes, Sizemore and Charles Rane as bad guy can't change that.

You damn skippy

Just a snack after a course day last Monday, and this was a while ago, and Passenger 57 is already old, and what an entertaining film it is.

I thought that Rane with his plastic surgery scene comes from Ricochet with Denzel Washington, it doesn't matter because the movie goes pretty smoothly in typical 90s action style. Running, flying, screeching tires and some serious stunts. The lessons and protocols that Cutter tries to teach the staff are certainly nice, but it's a shame that the bad guys again ignore all logic and reality in that regard. For example, how Rane shoots the captain in the head with a large caliber pistol, it is almost impossible that the bullet does not go through the head and then through the aircraft wall or cockpit window. If you want to shoot in an airplane, do so with a smaller caliber.

Once in the air, a fine cat and mouse game unfolds between Rane and his crooks on one side and Cutter with the help of Marti on the other, a battle that continues on the ground. Predictably, it's all a bit cliche too, especially the hillbilly sheriff and his gullible staff, and Rane's escape. Too bad it doesn't take place further up in the air. Snipes punching as usual, Payne fine as the cold and ruthless Rane, Sizemore slimmer than ever, Hurley pleasing to the eye, but Alex Datcher is no slouch either. Funny, by the way, that Snipes is reading a book called The Art Of War, 8 years later Snipes would play in a movie with the same title.

Passenger 57 is a more than fine 90s movie. Uncomplicated, smooth action, with the occasional shoeing flaw like an exploding staircase, and yes, the fashion of that time almost hurts the eyes.
