Very mediocre.

In any case, you're dealing with a 70s film that strives for a 30s stylization. You can hardly get a film much more boring in image. Attempts are made to brighten it up somewhat, with scene changes stitched through the film from left to right, bottom to top, flipping and circling. Sounds nicer than it is because it all happens very clumsily. The chapters were even reminiscent of those ugly Flash Flash commercials you see on some sites these days.

Furthermore, the whole story is fun to follow, but the FBI piece turned out to be too predictable to make the ending surprising. Redford wasn't too good and sometimes looked like a bad-tempered Brat Pitt, Newman is doing quite well (better than in his younger days), probably should have gone to HK in the 80-90's to to finish his career as a conman actor there.

Furthermore, by the way, a very bad intro, seemed like some TV series from the 70s was about to start.

Fairly dull and dry narration (which the clumsy editing and terrible music doesn't detract much from), otherwise I usually like those conmen stories to follow. Unfortunately, the script is a bit too simple and not enough is done to keep it really exciting. For the conmen thing at least 1.5 *

Old-fashioned quality, on all levels. Well set up story with some surprises. Captivating from start to finish in a great 1930s setting. Those two hours flew by. Beautiful cast. Newman and Redford are doing great and I know from countless other films. Shaw stays out of the fisherman for me Jaws (Film, 1975) in which I liked him better than in this The Sting.

All in all, this movie is highly recommended.

Big title? check. Famous cast? check. Good reviews and ditto grade? check. Well-known soundtrack? True...and check. High expectations? Secure!

It actually goes wrong at the beginning. The melody is recognizable, but also too cheerful and cold-hearted for my taste. It is the moment that I delve further into the film and read that it is partly a comedy crime film. swallow! Yet, apart from the faint melody, there is not much to notice in the beginning with the introduction of Hooker, Lonnegan, the trick on Mottala and the drama surrounding Luther. Not bad so far, but it doesn't bother me much either.

Over the next hour, the film gets too bogged down in the usual ingredients of the average crime and gambling movies for me. The whole set up, it will be well thought out and executed, but I find such things extremely boring to watch. Just like the so-called tension with gambling games and a towering stake, the interests are great, of course, the game is dangerous in that sense, but that doesn't mean anything to me either. At the very least, it's nice how they set up a gambling location with guests and all, and certainly the ending is still surprising, but I can't think of much more positive about this film.

Obviously I have nothing to do with this and it was two long hours. Fast forward to the next fun movie.
