The master shows himself in the limitation. Sidney Lumet used a script about twelve men in one room that was written for TV. The intensity, the confrontation between personalities and the claustrophobic feeling keep it captivating from start to finish.

Despite the limited possibilities, visually a lot is happening. The introduction contains a tracking shot with a camera that gives an impression of the size of the courthouse from the first floor. Once in the room, the viewer becomes a fly on the wall that secretly watches and gets bits of information spooned in. In the second half, the sweating bodies are shown from a low angle and a telephoto lens is used to make the walls appear closer. The combination of cigarette smoke and heat in a confined space gives an oppressive feeling.

The jury consists of white men, with a few exceptions from the upper middle class. They have to judge a boy from a lower social background with a Mediterranean appearance, possibly the son of Italian migrants. Prejudice is exposed. The differences in personality between the twelve men are played out: the doubter, the bully, the sports addict... Besides the charismatic Henry Fonda, especially Lee J. Cobb plays a wonderful role. No actor can get mad better than him.

The ending leaves the question of guilt open. The boy is acquitted because of reasonable doubt, but that does not rule out that he actually did it. This court drama provokes reflection on democratic legal principles, condemns reliance on first impressions and shakes apparent certainties.

Strong right-wing drama that takes place between four walls for the entire film. About subjectivity, the power of speech and what it means to participate in a democracy. Despite the fact that you can already see the mood from the beginning - the trajectory that the film will take - the film keeps its tension due to the strong acting roles and good use of tempo changes.

I do advise the gentlemen to drink more water in such hot weather.

Pretty strong. Another good example that the majority is usually wrong. This film by Sidney Lumet also proves that, of which I only saw Dog Day Afternoon. Possibly the most realistic heist movie I know (although it also makes that a bit long-winded). This film is of course a real talk movie, but because of the whole reasoning and puzzling of how and what happened, it never gets boring. Fonda is masterful in the film both in what he says and how he delivers it. It's basically calculating probabilities. The more possibilities there are that the perpetrator is innocent, the more likely he is to be effective. Detail by detail is dissected and sometimes a detail that is debunked is just what can make someone change their mind. Strong work and completely timeless if you ask me. The black and white never bothered me.
