Once upon a Time in America

Insanely beautiful movie. Actually I don't know where to start because this film has so much to offer. First of all, of course, the wonderful cinematography that you keep staring at like a beautiful painting. The way Sergio Leone has designed 1920s, 30s and 60s New York is brilliant. And Morricone's music is once again fantastically composed. In some scenes I just got goosebumps because of the music that puts you in a melancholic mood.

It switches between three time periods but it was remarkably easy to follow. Only the beginning was of course a bit strange, but after that you are as it were sucked into the film by a combination of atmosphere, music, great direction and strong actors with De Niro, Woods, Forsythe, Connelly and Young at the forefront. Once upon a Time in America is definitely a mafia movie, but more than that it is a movie about friendship, love, betrayal, loss, regret and living with the consequences of your actions. The dreams of young boys who at first seem to come true but burst like a bubble because of their actions. The downside is that when Conway (the otherwise very strong Treat Williams) makes his appearance, the story gets a bit messy and the atmosphere changes. A small bump that is quickly forgotten by the magnificent ending. The film is 220 minutes long but I wish it had been much longer. And then you know you're dealing with a special movie.

Once upon a Time in America the philosophical study of themes such as time, memories, love, violence and betrayal is praised for its beautiful cinematography, which certainly happened to me as well. The details and the complex story are so beautiful that despite the long playing time I couldn't get enough of it. The three periods filmed together gave a lot of variety and flowed seamlessly. This is really a very special movie.

Great to read all the comments after this great movie.

It is special that no one mentions the moment that young Deborah reads the poem to David that he will never be her lover. Beautiful scene!
