After many years I revised it again and it remains nicely in my top 10. Goodfellas is a grand rise & fall story based on the real life of mobster Henry Hill. I have also read the book and it is least as interesting.

Just about everything is right in this movie. It starts with a violent reckoning that immediately sets the tone for the harsh underworld in which Hill and cronies grow up. He knows how to quickly work his way up to a great man and that is literally about corpses. Liotta's narration gives the film just that little bit of lightness that many other related films lack.

The film draws a lot of power from its characters, thanks also to their real likenesses. Ray Liotta convincingly plays a gangster who wants to enjoy life and, to a certain extent, dutifully follows his orders. That smile of his every now and then is hilarious. Robert DeNiro is Jimmy Conway, a boss who commands respect from many and Joe Pesci plays himself you would almost say. Here too, as Tommy, he plays a huge tantrum. Perfectly interpreted and I always immediately think of the Spider scene. He continuously gets the blood from under your nails, but it is very entertaining.

Scorscese takes extensive time to tell the story, but sometimes goes through it quickly. As a result, the pace is quite high, which benefits the film. The dialogues are hilarious, captivating, exciting, it's never boring. The music is always spot on, the action is moderate, but the kills hard. It's a tough world that fascinates me infinitely, and Scorscese knows how to bring it best to the screen with this Goodfellas.

Watched for the thirtieth time last night/night, but with different eyes. More than ever I became aware of the self-created nightmare that these wiseguys live. The smile is never as wide as just before the ice pick pierces your neck, paranoia turns out to be but an underestimation of the horrors that await you in reality, compassion is eight blood-soaked aprons, rearing a leather belt. You can die from a misplaced joke.

Pooh, there is undeniably humor to be found, but the gallows variety. There is hardly any air. Actually from the start. The only light-heartedness is in the danse macabre that you have to perform according to the absolute code of honor of the Sicilians along the incendiary mood of the psychopaths on the edge of the dance floor. Always on your toes. A free bird, supposedly, but bound to your wife, to Paulie, to the next crime, to the small circle of like eccentrics, to the sacred silence. It is a caricature of freedom, of the good life, a parodying inversion, a grotesque. And the emphatic close-ups of the children in the midst of all this unbridled violence make everything even more palatable.

What a movie.

Great film within the mafia crime genre, something that I generally don't like. Yet this film stands out because of its acting, bold characters, humor and wonderful soundtrack.

As in many mafia prints, the rise of an errand boy is followed. In this case Henry. The first half hour is told with a lot of humour, a part in which we also get to know Tommy and Jimmy and especially Tommy stands out as a keg of gunpowder who gives the impression that he can even get into a fight with his shadow. It is especially the eternal noise around Tommy and the storytelling around Henry that does the film well.

But ... despite all the humor and atmosphere it is a typical crime Mafia film. A coming and going of names and characters with a long sequence of many small events. Door here, bring something there, pick up something here, driving a car here, driving a car there, conversation with a lot of swear words with that, slapping here, attack there... something that at some point flattens out for me in terms of impression and feels like a long while the film is only an hour away. As I say, that is purely down to me and that the genre is not for me.

Despite this, Goodfellas manages to hold onto a certain level until the end, mainly through the engaging Ray Liotta. Furthermore, the fine soundtrack stands out with too many good bands and songs to mention. Very nice for once.
