In June 1940, during World War II, Germany conquered France after a swift invasion. Both sides signed an armistice, after which the then-unknown General Charles de Gaulle fled to London. He believed, however, that a lost battle in France did not mean the war was lost. He hoped to convince both the world and his fellow countrymen of this.

When French Field Marshal Philippe Pétain [Alain Libolt] announces an armistice in June 1940, Brigadier General Charles de Gaulle [Simon Abkarian] refuses to accept it. He leaves for London to mobilize both French soldiers and the French people, hopefully with the support of Winston Churchill [Simon Russell Beale], to continue the fight against the Germans. The first part of a two-part story certainly does not portray De Gaulle as a classic folk hero: as a soldier, he is brave, persistent, and tactically astute; as a diplomat, he is haughty, colorless, and uncompromising. But the respectful relationship with political dinosaur Churchill and harsh political lessons force him to approach matters differently. An added bonus is the connection to the story of Fernand [Florian Lesieur], a patriotic youth who also learns hard lessons in his attempts to resist the occupier. A long film at 160 minutes (and this is only half of the whole story), but I wasn't bored for a single second. Although I wasn't on the edge of my seat for a second either; the film is more of a long summary than a truly good drama. The film entertained but also left me fairly cold; it only became more personal around that last attack in North Africa. I found the weaker parts to be those involving that young lad and sometimes the overly blatant presentation of chauvinism and heraldry – Michael Bay could learn a thing or two from this, so to speak.
In any case, an interesting piece of history (although it is always a matter of looking back and seeing what was and wasn't accurate), in which the actors all come across strongly and manage to portray their own characters well. Visually not very special. The budget certainly helps to paint a nice picture, but cinematically it is put together quite solidly without many noteworthy moments, except for a great cut towards a burning cigarette. I will definitely watch the second act soon. 3.0*.
