In June 1940, during World War II, Germany conquered France after a swift invasion. Both sides signed an armistice, after which the then-unknown General Charles de Gaulle fled to London. He believed, however, that a lost battle in France did not mean the war was lost. He hoped to convince both the world and his fellow countrymen of this.
