Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story plot

"Husband. Father. Fighter. Hero. Once you choose hope, anything is possible."

This documentary follows the life of American actor Christopher Reeve, best known for his role as Superman in the 1978 film of the same name. The superhero film gave him success and three sequels. Reeve's life changed in 1995 when he was paralyzed from the neck down after a near-fatal horse riding accident. He then became an activist for spinal cord injury treatment and disability rights. The film shows new material from the actor, and interviews with former colleagues and family members reveal how he transformed from unknown actor to iconic movie star.

The extraordinary life story of charismatic, energetic actor Christopher Reeve, who threw himself wholeheartedly into the title role in Superman (1978), which, thanks to him, his chemistry with Margot Kidder and revolutionary special effects, led to unexpected critical and commercial success. But after narrowly surviving a fall from his horse in 1995, he was paralyzed from the neck down. With the help of family members and close friends (including Glenn Close and Susan Sarandon), this documentary provides insight into the process that ultimately led Reeve to decide to use his status to raise awareness and funds for research into solutions for paralysis. Robin Williams played an important role in this. Some of the footage consists of AI-generated fictional dream sequences that are almost indistinguishable from the authentic footage. This does not do the credibility of this meaningful documentary any good, especially for those who only know Christopher Reeve by name. Too bad, because it casts a shadow over this moving and inspiring documentary.
