The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim plot

"Hope has yet to abandon these lands."

Two hundred and fifty years before the events of the trilogy "The Lord of the Rings", the war of the Rohirrim took place. This war was the reason to have the stronghold of Helm's Deep built. The legendary Helm Hammerhand, the mighty king of Rohan, has ordered this in defense of his people. His life in an era of bloodshed and his legacy from these turbulent times are highlighted.

Pretty okay.

Successful addition to Peter Jackson's Middle Earth. It is clearly not a masterpiece like the trilogy, but it is a nice variation on the known world.

But Jackson's world is very recognizably depicted. Edoras and Helm's Deep are designed according to the familiar designs and Howard Shore's score is also used. Ditto for a number of dialogues. There is no lack of fan service.

The War of the Rohirrim certainly has enough of its own face in the second part to stand on its own - the first half is a bit stiff in terms of narrative. When it comes to anime, I am often more impressed with the background and environment, the characters and animation itself I do not like at all. That is no different here.

More than Helm Hamerhand's film, this is his daughter's film. Helm is not much of a mythical figure. Brian Cox's voice is also too shrill for me. I was homesick for Bernard Hill for a moment.

So it was a success, although I think it helps to be a fan of the trilogy. It is not a new masterpiece but it is cooler than the uneven The Hobbit and a solid step up from the monstrosity that is The Rings of Power.

An altercation between King Helm Hammerhand [Brian Cox] and Freca [Shaun Dooley] escalates into a fistfight in which Freca is literally killed in one blow. His son Wulf [Luca Pasqualino] swears revenge and is immediately banished. Of course, it is only a matter of time before Wulf has managed to gather an army with which he can put his words into action. But in his way stand Helm's sons Haleth [Benjamin Wainwright], Hama [Yazdan Oafouri] and daughter Hèra [Gaia Wise], who was good friends with Wulf as a child. Not very successful combination of CGI backgrounds and Anime with a predictably melodramatic story and banal dialogues takes far too long.

In itself quite nice as a further elaboration of Middle Earth. Especially the music from the films of 20 years ago is nice to hear again. I also liked the animation, I am a fan of this style anyway, although the mix with CGI is sometimes downright ugly. But the film is mainly rather dull. The voice acting is very flat and the characters did little for me. Hera a bit too much the tough girl of today, that king was also just a weirdo and his almost superhuman powers I also found a bit strange and not very credible. The second hour is better than the first, which is really quite slow. 2.5*.
