This was a major slip-up.

Enough reason to look forward to it. Trailer looked promising and Eggers seemed the perfect candidate to revamp the 1922 story, no pun intended. And it's a shame I never saw that classic in its entirety, because I guess it will help you as a viewer to understand what Eggers is trying to do here; I was a bit lost in that.

It seems as if he wants to stay true to the original by keeping certain (style) elements and on paper I have absolutely no objection to that, but it all felt a bit artificial to me and it rarely translates into real tension, icy atmosphere or even a flowing whole. Instead it created a distance that makes it constantly feel like you are watching a play that is just a little too serious, that comes across as ludicrous rather than atmospheric.

The somewhat puppet-like play with shadows, the exaggerated delivery of the actors, the tiresomely present soundtrack and even the controlled camera work: everything exudes a certain weightiness that just won't pay off in actual effect. The only thing that really inspires awe are some of the sets, especially when the town is bent under constant snowfall or when a cemetery is veiled by mist. The color scheme, which cleverly switches between color and black and white, is also a nice nod to the original.

With one jump scare it really had me and one horror shot that I was impressed by, but in between there is a film that tries to achieve everything but never really managed to carry me along. And therefore feels way too long. Many will probably walk away with it, but I found this a tough sit. 2*

am a big fan of the lighthouse and the Northman, i think eggers is one of the most exciting directors of modern times. i have been looking forward to the release of this film all year and have not been disappointed.

The film looks old, beautiful sets and I was sick of the scary scenes, a bit too exciting for me. I give 4 stars for now and maybe it will go up later

I didn't really care for the original film, but that's also over 100 years old. This wasn't really a remake I saw coming, but in the hands of Robert Eggers I could see it happening. The original Nosferatu was the first film adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, with some name changes to avoid discussions. The later Dracula films feature much more of the gothic element, the noble man with the cape who acts very dramatically. In this Nosferatu it goes back to basics, with mainly the small changes of course from the old Nosferatu. That makes for a darker and rougher film. And what a great Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok! Skarsgård knows how to handle these kinds of roles (he also played Pennywise and The Crow).

Sometimes the gap with the audience becomes too big and it is more theatrical than atmospheric. Something that I also did not like in the original Nosferatu. But what it brings visually and in terms of grotesque appearance, it does very well. The film world nowadays practically only shows big films from a franchise, reboot, sequel, prequel, spinoff... or small character films. If we have to swallow reboots, it may well be of this level.
