Robert Eggers has promised that his remake of Nosferatu will be a straight-up horror movie.

The acclaimed director first hit fame thanks to horror The Witch, and would subsequently make The Lighthouse and The Northman, both of which had tinges of horror but not as much as his first movie.

Eggers has been developing Nosferatu since 2015 and has described it as a passion project.

Official premise:

'Nosferatu tells a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman in 19th century Germany and the ancient Transylvanian vampire who stalks her, bringing untold horror with him.'

The iconic vampire Count Orlock was famously played by Max Schreck in the 1922 original, and for the 2024 version, Bill Skarsgard will take on the role.

“Yeah, it’s a scary film. It’s a horror movie. It’s a Gothic horror movie,” Egger told Empire.

“And I do think that there hasn’t been an old-school Gothic movie that’s actually scary in a while. And I think that the majority of audiences will find this one to be the case.”

Nosferatu stars Skarsgard, Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Willem Dafoe, Simon McBurney and Ralph Ineson.

Bill Skarskard plays Coung Orlock

Eggers is legitimately concerned that Skarsgard might not get the adulation he deserves for his performance, as he completely immerses himself into the Count Orlock character.

“I’ll say that Bill has so transformed, I’m fearful that he might not get the credit that he deserves because he’s just… he’s not there," he explained.

“He felt like honouring who had come before him. It’s all very subtle. But I think the main thing is that he’s even more a folk vampire. In my opinion he looks like a dead Transylvanian nobleman, and in a way that we’ve never actually seen what an actual dead Transylvanian nobleman would look like and be dressed like.”
