Got to see the film at the last minute today in Utrecht. Never seen such a good movie. It takes a lot of work for tears to roll down my cheeks, but they really got it done. It is a pity that the lady from the Filmkrant has not understood anything at all, or she is too young or she simply has no feeling, as someone wrote before.

It is precisely about the subcutaneous that is clearly felt by the sublime acting and has nothing to do with emigration or women's emancipation. This hidden layer is constantly present and makes it a goosebumps movie for me. But indeed in total contrast to the current fast-paced social media jaded world we now live in.

A nice movie that looks good. First of all, it is all neatly portrayed, although the images are not really special. The lead actress does very well, plays a sweet and witty character, there is a nice chemistry with her opponent, but also with the actresses who play her roommates.

The side note is that it also feels very easy. There is hardly any conflict, everyone except the old bitch is nice to each other. The main character of course struggles with some inner conflicts, but it is not really problematic. The conflict is not really brought to a head. That also applies to the choice of an Italian partner. There really isn't anyone who makes a fuss about it (not even the old bitch, who seems to use the fact that she's married most of all), while I can't imagine it wasn't sensitive in those years.

The ending feels happy, but a few things are also not portrayed. For example, how is it going now with her mother who is left lonely? We don't see that. Their farewell feels quite abrupt, but also without significant struggle.

In combination with the sometimes emphatically present music, that really costs the film points. 2.5*.

Brooklyn has become a beautiful atmospheric film about immigration to the Promised Land that America was then. And that atmosphere is fully explored at passport control and the scene on the boat. Eilis is a self-confessed woman who can't resist the lure of the big America and leave the small local Ireland behind. The film threatens to become a simple romantic film where she has to choose between two lovers, but the film goes further than that.

Brooklyn conveys the feeling, the unease, of leaping into the dark, not knowing if it will ever be light. The safe haven of a carefree safe existence - for many others Europe was a closed futureless chapter - was exchanged for a promising glorious new future. Too often the crossing of the Great Lake is presented too romanticized, as if everyone succeeds in America (if you will ...). Eilis also succeeds in America, but the film creates the emotion of the nostalgia for home, the loneliness, the uncertainty that comes with arriving in an unknown new world.

The atmosphere of Brooklyn is wonderfully expressed with the beautiful cinematography, set setting and costumes. The bustling city really comes to life with the picturesque streets, beautiful bridges and lively nightlife areas. The acting talent of Saoirse Ronan also stands out and lifts the film to a higher level. Well-deserved nominations at the Oscars at the time, unfortunately no cashing in.
