A film characterized by excellent acting. You can tell me that these people actually work in a restaurant kitchen. The entire movie was (seems) shot in one take.

Unfortunately, all the stressful kitchen clichés come up, which makes the film very predictable. Such as drug use, money problems, someone with an allergy, the unexpected reviewers, difficult guests and so on.

Nevertheless, thanks to the good acting, the film looked nice.

7/10

Long takes hand-held drama begins just before Chef Andy [Stephen Graham] welcomes the first guests of the day to his restaurant. A critical inspector [Thomas Coombes] informs him that his restaurant is going from 5 to 3 stars, but Andy seems to be confused. What exactly is going on has been unclear for a long time, but Andy's lack of concentration runs like a red thread through the evening in which all kinds of small incidents pile up and the stress on both staff and some customers brings the proverbial boiling point from the title. Well-directed independently made drama is set in real time and is full of punchy moments that leave room for every member of the cast to impress, but is anchored by Graham's controlled central rendition.

#4000.

I'm still missing 10 films on this site, but this was the 4000th film I got to see. I chose this particular film because of the one-take concept and the fact that it resembles my own work environment. That a film like this automatically appeals to me more than can be called logical. That deserves a special occasion.

What is striking about this film is that it is recorded via very long takes. That way you are right in the middle of the movie, which quickly increases the stress and anxiety of the job on a busy evening with all kinds of piling problems. If you work in this industry, you will probably soon be able to spot the mistakes that cause the screenplay in the film to escalate.

The acting is strong but it takes a while before the switch to stress is made for the viewer. The build-up is not done very neatly, in the end there is mainly 'sudden' panic. The reasons are often there, but the turning points are seldom to be discovered. It is also unfortunate that a lot of effort is put into making the story extra heavy. Just the focus on the stress of the job would have been more than enough.

I also found the very last sequence a bit off the mark, but otherwise the film looks good and it is regularly exciting. It's not a thriller as you might expect. No scenarios where characters go after killers or have near-death experiences. It's more of a psychological escalation thriller, and it certainly has its interesting moments. Good movie. Glad I chose this one.
