Completely deservedly prized comic drama about Christine, a teenager in 2002 who tries to give her life a different direction and to that end enters into new relationships, but also puts old ones at risk. Director/screenwriter Greta Gerwig has already shown in Frances Ha that she knows how to create lifelike characters and that her screenplay is laced with apparent ease with dialogues that constantly surprise and smoothly transition from humor to sentiment, without ever falling into caricature. Lady Bird is in that respect an absolute masterpiece for which Gerwig herself, but also lead actress Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf (as her passive-aggressive mother) have already received much applause. But in this brilliantly written and flawlessly acted film, I was most impressed with Beanie Feldstein (as Christine's best friend Julie) and Tracy Letts (as her heartwarming father) who shine the most. But with such a fantastic scenario you can hardly help but shine!

After the first few minutes you slip unsuspectingly into a one and a half hour long film. The movie is like a river; the water flows with no apparent destination, and along the way it takes things it encounters in its path without being the least bit picky.

I thought it was relatively short and there are probably more of this type of films that are better in content than this one, but this film has something. It has an impeccable naturalness, an invisible third person perspective, a balance in the portrayal, excellent acting (not perfect, but it is certainly more than sufficient), a pleasant smooth atmosphere and appearance make it a nice whole to watch. Autobiographical (partly) is appropriate here, looks a lot like a diary, but I find the film interesting, on the other hand perhaps a little flat; well, it just depends on how you look at it.

It's understandable that you don't need to have seen too many of these kinds of films to appreciate them and also step into them with the right frame of mind, but still...

In my opinion, this movie is so good because it doesn't really get anywhere. Never over sentimental. Also not extremely comical which would undermine other aspects. Just fine, in everything.
