Very much enjoyed another Pixar 'classic'. The film doesn't even have to have a lot of humor, because you don't really lie double. But it's a beautiful story, captivating characters and beautifully made. It may be sentimental at times, but they never go too far. The music is also beautiful and the ending is perfect.

4*

I have a morbid fascination with death, which has especially manifested itself during holidays in some Catholic countries in Europe where they sometimes display the remains of saints in the churches. I remember a church in Austria where we had fled because of a severe thunderstorm. In the church there turned out to be a display case with skulls that naturally lit up extra with every lightning, which of course created a wonderfully morbid atmosphere.

The whole idea of Día de Muertos really appeals to me, so in that respect this was a film that seemed interesting to me. In the end, this film is far from morbid, but still worth watching. The whole thing is very colorfully animated, especially the land of the dead. The story, in which the main character delves into the family history, knows how to amuse and sometimes also move. The downside is that it's a bit moralizing about how important family is; such morals unfortunately belong to the current films from the Disney stable that Pixar also belongs to.

On the positive side, the music is not as terrible as in most new Disney films, which want to be quite big in terms of music. Such bombastic soundtracks are rarely for me and you can often not even hear what they are singing now. Some of the songs here are also big, but are sung by a less sympathetic person, while they are kept rather small by the more sympathetic characters and that appealed to me.

I can't say whether it's all authentic, but the Mexican lady I watched the film with was very pleased with the effort the makers put into portraying Mexican culture as faithfully as possible, so apparently it's okay. 3.5*.

Nice though. Although very typical Disney in many things (like the very round ending where everything comes together, the film is also original in a number of ways and surprising enough to captivate. The film should have more of the story of jokes and/or funny characters, compared to other Pixar animation films. And fortunately not too busy, such as The Incredibles. And besides, and I think that is the greatest asset of Coco, this animated film actually has some depth with a moral that goes beyond karma.A must as far as I'm concerned.
