It may not be a very surprising message and the content is somewhat predictable, but it is something to be warned and at the same time encouraged and even reassured by the experiential expert par excellence, the wise nature expert David Attenborough. that we have to do it differently, that we can do it differently and that, despite everything, it is still not too late to turn the tide.
Of course birth control is needed, of course we have to eat less meat, of course we have to cut down less rainforest and fish less. That's as clear as a lump. But to the most intelligent organism on earth, we are at the same time the most selfish, the most arrogant and the cruelest creature that ever existed. The doomsday scenario that is sketched halfway through, with massive warming, deforestation and mass deaths seems the most obvious to me. Somehow I hope to experience it; it's a comforting thought that I could see humanity perish, like being the last to turn off the lights in the Great Story of humanity.
But David Attenborough also knows how to give the viewer that positive note at the end, and in that respect this docu is also predictable. Despite all the doomsday scenarios, there is still that glimmer of hope. Attenborough is simply a good guy and clearly prefers to give 'us' a message of hope than a message of doom. That may also weaken the sense of urgency a bit, as if we are all lulled back to sleep with 'it'll be all right'.
Anyway, a beautiful crown on Attenborough's life's work; for someone who is still so mobile and so clear-headed, it is to be hoped that he will stay with us for a while, but if he is forced to stop making documentary, then at least he can look back on this final piece with pride .

Watched this documentary in quarantine last night - I thought it would be fitting for a year that forced reflection. It was much more depressing than I had anticipated, but in a way my intention for a reflective evening was confirmed.
It is an extremely impressive testimony; I have rarely seen such a strong, clear, and concise account of the destruction of the planet. Every sentence is spot on, the images are beautiful. Moreover, I found Attenborough's focus very convincing: it is about the survival of humanity, not so much about 'natural life', which will also recover without us. But humanity is soon at stake, because the scenarios for the 1930s and 1940s are very pessimistic in the absence of action.
It is amazing how Attenborough explains the problems clearly in a short time, more clearly than it is for most people up to now. Perhaps the biggest problem is not just the will, but also the awareness of the problem, which I don't think is nearly as big as many think. Debates quickly get bogged down in a disorderly enumeration of problems, without tackling the coherence in its entirety. And that again in an increasingly polemical context. In any case, we as a species are the only ones who can still restore the balance and our chances of survival - at least according to Attenborough - if we are quick.
