Here and there I read that the special effects are not too good, but I find them breathtaking. When I saw this movie for the first time I was really open-mouthed watching the flying scenes that reminded me of my own flying dreams. Everyone dreams that they can fly, but the way in which dreams are flown is different for each person. One takes off from the ground with flapping wings and then shoots up in a perpendicular line like a rocket, the other first takes a run-up and then takes off like an airplane. Hover, glide, fly... The height can also vary, where one flies high above the city like a kind of Superman, the other stays a little lower to the ground or jumps from roof to roof like a nimble cat. For Freud, such a flying dream had a sexual meaning and represented a sexual desire. However, according to Jung, such a dream rather had the meaning of freedom and escape from the rules and demands of the ordinary world.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is an epic Chinese fairy tale and you could call it 'feminist', in the sense that the story revolves around a young lady who wants to free herself from the straitjacket and exchange the life that has been laid out for her for the great adventure. When she visits an inn dressed as a boy, her presence is not appreciated and a fight soon breaks out in which she impales practically all the men present with her sword. The fights are beautifully choreographed with funny elements in them and lots of comic book-like catchphrases like Oeh!, Argh!, Ieejaj! and it is mainly women who fight. The villain is also a woman: the mysterious Jade Fox, feared by everyone and notorious for her deadly poison darts. Great role by Cheng Pei-pei.

Disappointing.

A classic indeed, but one that has never really triggered me to watch. Apparently I haven't missed anything in all these years. Flying swordsmen are usually not really my thing. Now and then that can result in surprisingly beautiful cinema, genre House of Flying Daggers, but Ang Lee works it poorly.

There is absolutely no panache in the film. The fight scenes are usually boring, with one exception. The cast, with a number of well-known names, does not really bake or does not get the chance to do so. Ziyi Zhang with the biggest role is the worst of the bunch. Her role as an adolescent bitch is exciting.

In addition, Lee makes it all so very important, without it being anything at all. I miss epic, I miss adventure and I miss the emotion of the different side plots..
