Evolution plot
"Coming to wipe that silly smile off your planet."
Wayne, a firefighter in training, is practicing for his exam in the desert when he sees a meteorite impact. The next day, teachers Ira Kane and Harry Block manage to get hold of the meteorite. They take a sample, and see that a blue liquid comes out. The liquid contains a single-celled organism, which, however, rapidly evolves into a complete being. When the aliens start to spread, the military gets involved.

Evolution has become a parody of the SF movies with some fun references. Just think of David Duchovny from the X-Files, Dan Aykroyd from Ghostbusters and you even notice references to Alien, Jurassic Park and Independence Day. It's primarily a comedy, of course, which wasn't actually intended, but would go more in that direction when writing the script. We're talking 2001 and David Duchovny took a side step from his success with The X-Files. He even canceled a role in Star Wars II in order to participate in Evolution. Still, I think it was the wrong choice. Duchovny is not so bad in this film, Ayrkroyd is more of a caricature, Orlando James is also not so bad and Sean William Scott will never be fun. This SF movie is too comical and not enough action or blockbuster to be really fun. It gets stuck in an average score.

Funny, unpretentious entertainment.
The story of course makes no sense and breaks just about all the laws of nature. But still it's pretty funny. Not cult enough to get points there, too sloppy to be a parody of the genre. David Duchovny only half manages to make Agent Mulder forget, and is actually its weakest point. The mix with Orlando James does work nicely. Not the one with Julianne Moore. None of the actors are really doing well, and the directing also seems a bit lackluster.
But as a film in between it's quite good.

Delicious pulp with a wonderful team that fights aliens. They crash into a meteorite and, as the movie title suggests, evolve into horrific creatures. The team has plenty of experience in the form of Fox Mulder, a witty (often against the unfunny) geologist, Julianne Moore (always okay), two fat nerds and Stifler. This can't go wrong, right!
The beauty of Evolution is that it balances on the border when it comes to humor. Sometimes it is really dramatically wrong, other times I could laugh about it. In addition, it also has a lot of fun 50s B-movie elements and I'm mainly referring to the design of the aliens. Look great!
