Brilliantly lame parody.

And a parody of so many movies that I quickly lost count of it. Sometimes very funny, but also very corny and sometimes very flat. Really something to be in the mood for - and I apparently was, because I watched the entire DVD box one after the other. Kind of an Austin Powers marathon.

Then this one does have Elizabeth Hurley - by far the prettiest and cutest, I mean most shagadelic and groovy Austin Powers babe of the bunch. And although Dr. Evil might have to grow a bit in his role as a world domination wannabe, at least he's still nice and simple evil here.

So perhaps the best of the three films. Except for...

On the bland side.

I had never actually seen Austin Powers, although I was of course familiar with the character. At the end of the 90s you couldn't miss it either, but the humor never really appealed to me. In retrospect, that turned out to be fairly correct, although it was less serious than expected.

Myers himself hovers between annoying and funny all the time. Often the humor is a bit too simple, it looks a bit too cheap or it is just a bit chewed up. But there are also scenes that are a bit more absurd, that come out more surprising. It's those moments that make the film watchable.

It's probably more fun for people who are into the 60s, or like a simple Bond parody, but both are not my thing. Fortunately, the tempo is high enough and there are also enough successful jokes throughout the misses. Okay enough to throw in the sequels as well.

2.0*

Based on the Austin Powers trilogy, it can be said that Mike Myers suffers from Eddie Murphy syndrome. In other words; he likes to hear and see himself and therefore wants to play as many characters as possible. He does that in the Austin Powers series too, he gets an extra character every film to show how diverse he can play. This is the least present in this first film; Myers plays two roles, both the title hero and the villain. Fortunately, they're both pretty nice roles, although Dr. Evil is clearly funnier than title character Powers. His character doesn't get much further than being horny. Elizabeth Hurley also has few options with her rather boring character.

Fortunately, this film has a series of nice supporting roles from people like Michael York, Robert Wagner, Mindy Sterling or Seth Green. And even a supporting actor like Charles Napier comes by. The jokes in the script are often pretty bland, but it's especially the small jokes - and which the main characters have nothing to do with - that work well. In particular, those scenes with Dr. Evil (the bits of drama when we get to see the home situation of the deceased employees are very witty.

Go ahead, 3.5 stars.
