Monty Python and the Holy Grail plot

"And now! At Last! Another film completely different from some of the other films which aren't quite the same as this one is."

King Arthur (Graham Chapman), with his trusty coconut-clapper Patsy (as a cheap substitute for a noble steed), searches for knights worthy of the Round Table. Sir Lancelot (John Cleese), Sir Bedevere (Terry Jones) and Sir Galahad (Michael Palin) join the king, but so do the lesser-known, and as his minstrel likes to emphasize, slightly less brave Sir Robin (Eric Idle). At some point, God appears to Arthur and his entourage and instructs them to seek the Holy Grail. The knights each go in search of the grail, but their quest is not without its difficulties.

Ok, finally got to see Monty Python. And no, fiercely against the tide, it seems that the film was found to be insufficient. As much as I can appreciate John Cleese in, for example, Falthy Towers or I can enjoy the jokes in Black Adder, I can't do it here.

It may depend on the humor, but I didn't see much humor in it. That sword fight in the beginning I thought was okay, but for the rest (that sword fight too, by the way) it was pretty silly, playful to even clownish. The film is also fragmentary so that I was taken out every time. I did try again - I saw the film against my will, one and a half hours isn't exactly that long now - but it didn't help. The nuns, the rabbit, the Almighty, ... No, no and again no. Let's just say the "faintness" took over from the humor, and then you just can't get it right.

Pretty okay.

I can imagine that in 1975 this was groundbreaking in several areas. The absurdity of countless scenes is sky-high. Not surprisingly, that leaves little room for a middle ground: you are usually for or against.

I don't go along with that extreme thinking, because I think that the balance remains in balance with me in the end. Yes, the absurdity is not for everyone and certainly not always for me. But in the end the film does deliver some scenes that are very worthwhile, although I have never actually been rolling on the floor laughing.

The creativity of the gentlemen of Monty Python is admirable, even 45 years later. I won't keep The Life of Brian and The Meaning of Life waiting too long, although they can also be very disappointing. We will see.

Hmm...bloody wheater!

Growing up in the era when the repetition of the repetition was before it, in the form of the little skits. And as so often with short skits and films, Bottom or Mr. Bean that benefits from a short approach, it sometimes succeeds less well in a longer packaging. Now, along with Monty Python, the humor has always been a bit too absurd and bland for me. But in the end I gave it a try and although I feared the worst for the first ten minutes, it wasn't too bad in the end.

Absurd, bland, witty, but often also repetitive with something that is quite bland. And everything gets a sneer, no sacred houses with the Pythons, that's funny, nothing is safe from ridicule. As I said before, I broke into a sweat during the extremely lame discussion about the coconut and swallows. A discussion that lasts and lasts, immediately sets the tone, but also immediately shows its weak side. If the joke itself isn't fun, repetition doesn't make it better, of course it's about the idea of the endless discussion behind it, yet it's a shaky balance on a thin rope. Fortunately, the joke after, 'bring out your dead' is immediately better. An alternation of quite nice humor and some lesser moments alternate after that.

The castle with the women is quite funny, the knight fight fine, the 'Ni' knights were not too bad and, although short, the presence of Connie Booth is always good. That Cleese had done well. The Holy Grail cannot be called disappointing and certain moments definitely come out, but the fragmentary narrative style is not quite my thing and the successful humor manages to get a chuckle at best. So nice for once, and that's it.
