“You are my best friend. You are my only friend.”

Excellent. I might have expected more from it, but Mary and Max is a creative and admirable film. The bond between Mary and Max is at the heart of the film, and their friendship is well fleshed out. The stop motion approach works great, as does the penpal concept. Although it does get a bit repetitive after half an hour, especially as Mary gets older and there is a disconnect between Mary and Max. The last scene is impressive and heartbreaking.

Not having any prior knowledge turned out to have enormous advantages again; so you come across very pleasant surprises. Mary and Max is a wonderful movie. Sweet, but never too much. Witty, but never flat or too easy. Interesting from start to finish. And above all very heartwarming!

4.5 stars.
