Groundhog Day plot

"He’s having the worst day of his life … over, and over …"

Phil Connors is a cranky weatherman who is sent to Punxsutawney to cover the annual Groundhog Day. He gets snowed in there and much to his surprise he wakes up the next day and it's the same day again. He first starts to take advantage of this by, among other things, seducing his colleague Rita (MacDowell), but in the end he has to look for a solution if he does not want to experience the same day for eternity.

Groundhog Day is a hidden gem! I got this tip through a friend and I have no complaints. At first sight, the film does not appeal: simple title and a horrible DVD cover. Typically a third-rate nineties rom-com shitty movie like there are 13 in a dozen starring Adam Sandler, Julia Roberts and co. NOT SO!

The story captivates with the premise of what you would do if you could relive each day in the knowledge that you can correct 'mistakes' yourself to steer your (next) day. Superbly played by Murray. I could fully empathize with the story and have already fantasized about what I would do in that situation. Of course, not everything would be sweet and sweet. The story is not boring either: the common thread is his attraction to Rita and he tries to court her in a forced and spontaneous way. In addition, other daily schedules are nicely integrated into the film (the educational tour, the destructive tour, the depressing tour, the holy saint tour, etc.). And all that in 100 minutes.

The film also contains some witty funny situations and statements that make it extra light-hearted. The film also aims for a clear moral, somewhat corny, but not wrong for that. The fact that this film surprised me in a positive way with a nice original concept deserves a 4.0*. For me, therefore, one of the very best films in this romcom genre (where the bar is in principle set at a maximum of 3.0*).

Groundhog Day in 2021 honestly suffers a bit from the fact that the whole concept has been repeated over and over in the years after this film came out. At least, that's how I experienced it. The film doesn't do much wrong, but it doesn't feel really fresh anymore. Every element that comes along is predictable, and then it just became a long sit for me. Nothing fun or crazy is done with the concept either; the scene in the beginning where he drives recklessly and is chased by the police is just a rare example. What I also thought was a shame is that there is a lot of attention for the love story. Actually almost from the start. For example, there seems to be little room for some comedy, which is a pity. The only really comedic thing is Bill Murray's deadpan acting performance. There is also a big plus; Murray is on a roll and thankfully keeps the film entertaining until the very end. Opponent Andie MacDowell is also pleasant. It is a pity that the love story takes up so much space, but with two lesser actors it could have turned out more annoying.

And call it sacrilege, but I, for example, found the recent Palm Springs to be a more fun and refreshing take on the time loop concept.

A big 3* for Groundhog Day.

Finally seen this movie now on Amazon. I've seen quite a few spin-offs of this concept, but never this actual Groundhog Day. Anyway, a great movie that just didn't captivate me completely. Murray is okay and the plot continues to develop well. The film probably lasts just a little too long, but despite the repetition of the day, the film has little repetition, at most some lesser scenes that could have been cut out. Visually very scanty, never super funny and on a dramatic level not free of clichés. A sufficient one. 3.0*.
