Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma plot

"A new kind of horror remake."

A queer filmmaker is being given the honor of directing the next installment of a long-running slasher film. The female director focuses on casting the actress whose character survived the bloody events of the first film. The two women are drawn into a downward spiral of psychosexual madness.

Queer Awakening, a film about making a film and a loving ode to old horrors with countless sequels. And it all fits together wonderfully. Anderson shines in a role that references Norma Desmond from Sunset Blvd. We even get a part of the fictional film the film is about as a film within the film. Pay attention from the start, because the introduction of the Camp Miasma films at the beginning is great fun.

Queer filmmaker Kris [Hannah Einbinder] has been asked to direct the reboot of the Camp Miasma franchise (not to be confused with Friday the 13th). She has a meeting with Billy Monroe [Gillian Anderson], the star of the first Camp Miasma, who has been living as a recluse for years at the location where Camp Miasma was filmed. They philosophize about the symbolism of that film, watching clips in which serial killer Little Death [Jack Haven], a guy with a plastic protective jacket and a ventilation shaft for a head, murders victims. Anderson's imitation of Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard is amusing, but there is absolutely no horror. The deliberately cheap (read: bad) splatter effects only remind genre connoisseurs that the era of Tom Savini is over. The same goes for the sets and matte painting. Thinks it is meaningful, but is meaningless.

Horror films have been doing well in recent years in an era where everything is being recycled. Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is an ode to the slasher film but remains exciting and original enough on its own. In a genre that is fun but simultaneously milked dry, this film manages to hold attention. It is somewhat meta without losing itself. The film has a strong wink at the ambiguity of Hollywood. They want something new, but preferably stick to the same old thing. It is a film full of symbolism, especially regarding sexuality and identity. I went into the film blind and was enormously pleasantly surprised. Beautifully made, in which the ode to the genre is visually executed with great care, there is plenty of suspense, and the black humor works too. A film that dares to go far enough and at the same time pays attention to the details.
