The Usual Suspects plot

"Five Criminals. One Line Up. No Coincidence."

In San Pedro Bay, a port of Los Angeles, chaos with many corpses has arisen after a huge explosion on a cargo ship. Customs officer Dave Kujan (Chazz Palminteri) travels from New York to the West Coast to question Verbal Kint (Kevin Spacey), the only surviving witness who has made a special deal with law enforcement. Kujan is almost certain that the suspected dead criminal Dean Keaton (Gabriel Byrne) has a hand in the case. Meanwhile, it turns out that there is another witness, in the hospital, who sheds a different light on the case.

The plot twist at the end blew me away when I first saw the movie. Not so much the plot twist itself, but the way it was delivered gave me goosebumps. Now on the second review, I have enjoyed this movie again. Good actors, especially Spacey as limping Verbal and Palminteri as police inspector Dave Kujan, but also Pete Postlethwaite as Kobayashi and Benicio Del Toro as the freaky Fenster ("He'll flip ya, flip ya for real!").

I've seen this movie three times now: once shortly after release, once sometime in the 10's, and just now again. And after the third time, my reaction is still the same as after the first time: where does this film actually get its reputation? The heists aren't that spectacular, the game is hit and miss (Spacey and Postlethwaite are excellent, but I just see Pollak and Baldwin trying really hard to be the tough guy instead of actually being), and because that whole Keyser Söze through the story of Spacey but a little out of the blue, the search for his identity is so little urgent that after the Great Reveal I think: yes, and then? The sixth sense had a reveal in the last minutes that put the whole previous movie in a different light, but because the previous 95% there was so good and because I cared so much about the characters that reveal was too really a big emotional impact, but with The usual suspects I just think: what a turnoff, was that the big punchline the scriptwriter has been working towards throughout the film? Maybe the two audio commentary tracks on my DVD will make me change my mind (for example, by commanding admiration for the angles and craftmanship of the intrigue), but I'm not sure if I'd pay a fourth or even fifth viewing for that.

A compelling and complex crime story. The entire film shows the power of fiction and manipulation and how that can yield more power than stupid violence. Although the story is quite solid, there is one thing I don't understand:

why did Verbal Kint let the cops get him to sit down on that whole dick story? He could have driven away with the van with money. Apparently he left that to Postlewaithe ("Kobayashi").

Another mystery is why Dean Keaton's corpse has not been identified, which could have been done with his teeth despite the fire. Or was his body taken by Kobayashi to disappear?

The actors, of which Palminteri is my favorite, are strong. Nice to see a very early role of Esposito who would later star as Gus in Breaking Bad. Del Toro hadn't really broken through yet, but it's nice and different.

But I don't think the film is a thriller at all. It doesn't have a lot of atmosphere either, so it's a very talkative film with little music. There's not so much tension in it, just the need to pay very close attention not to miss any important plot details. In terms of camera work or decorum, I don't see anything special, nothing to give it a real classic film noir status.

Definitely a good movie, but a little overrated.
