Slumdog Millionaire plot

"What does it take to find a lost love?"

The story of Jamal Malik, a young orphan who decides to participate in the Hindi version of the program 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire'. The whole country watches as Jamal is just one question away from the top prize. During the intermission of the program, however, something happens that Jamal hadn't counted on; he is arrested, because the police are sure that he is scamming. They can't believe a street kid like him has so much knowledge. Determined to prove his innocence, Jamal tells stories about the slum where he grew up with his brother, the adventures they had, encounters with gangs and he talks about his former love. Each chapter in his story is a wonderful key to the answer to each of the questions. Amazed at his stories, the police wonder what a boy like him - without an apparent desire for riches - is doing at such a game display. If the last question has to be answered, they, along with about ninety million viewers, will get an answer to this question...

Boyle on steam with a common thread that I am usually rather wary of, but a film that soon becomes almost impossible to resist. It all runs like clockwork. Visually as bright as it can be. Bathed in the most attractive colours, price-shooting locations and the dynamic way it is portrayed, the film immediately energizes. Something that gets an extra boost from yet again an almost perfectly used soundtrack.

Boyle again appears to have a sharply tuned fingerspitzengefühl to convert music into fuel for his film. And then there's the narrative. Ingenious how youth and present find each other, fluently intertwined on the basis of the show. It's also special, because it brings together hard, frisky and sweet elements without them biting each other. The film gets a little more difficult when it has to switch to its finale, but with so much credit in the pocket, it's not insurmountable.

Million Hunt

Danny Boyle is a fine director, and Slumdog Millionaire has to be one of his biggest blockbusters. However, sometimes a title is so acclaimed that the actual viewing experience can only be disappointing, and I had the idea that that would be the case here too. Self-fulfilling prophecy? Maybe.. Because I thought this was a great film across the board, but certainly not the big hit that most people claim it is.

I understand that Jamal Malik's life is told through the quiz questions, but at a certain point this trick started to feel a little too forced. Especially with the question about who the third musketeer was, this fact was just a bit too much. Sometimes the story also had a bit too much Hollywood content, like e.g. the brother of Jamal who sacrifices his life so that Latika can find him again. Could there not have been a less drastic way for her to leave this place? I thought this together with the fact that the relationship between Jamal and Latika was very romanticized. It's really typically American to want to give the viewer the idea that love conquers all. While this chance, certainly in these circumstances, was a lot smaller. It would have been more realistic if Latika had acted as the one who got away. A broken love through circumstances. Anyway, then it might have all been too tragic and the audience might not have swallowed the story like sweet cake.

So much for my criticism, because although the Hollywood level was just a bit too high, this has at the same time become one of the most popular non-American spoken films ever, because of the fresh and original story. This is carried by an excellent cast in which the director knows how to build up the tension more than once in a professional way. In these areas nothing but praise for this production.

Good.

Not the best film I had secretly hoped for, but still a good film. Danny Boyle expresses himself visually in his direction of this underdog story. It's not always my kinds of colors - it's quite pronounced. But all in all, there is something to experience for 2 hours.

Plus, Dev Patel does a great job. Other than that I wouldn't call it nostalgic, but it's still nice to hear that tune from 'Who wants to be a Millionaire'. As a child I sometimes saw it pass, although they have never followed it here.
