During World War II, an Italian man (Roberto Benigni), his wife and son are taken to a German labour camp. To spare the child the prospect of certain death, he presents the journey as a game in which you can win prizes. La Vita è Bella is a film that is somewhat difficult to get into due to Benigni's hyperactive portrayal of Guido's character, but ultimately the film wins out thanks to its warmth and, in part, the beautiful story.
The story that ultimately justifies Guido's character and still leaves a heartwarming impression. However, I felt the film took too much time for the meeting between Guido and Dora and too little for the camp part, so I ultimately didn't get the feeling that they really stayed there for long (partly due to Guido and Giosué's appearance as well).
The ending is really beautiful, though it could have ended at the moment when Giosué gets to ride along in the tank. That really is the most beautiful part of the whole movie.

La Vita è Bella is a film that succeeds on both the dramatic and comedic fronts. The story is impressive and moving every time, yet despite that, the film has enough comedic moments that never seem out of place. You have to like Roberto Benigni, but he portrays his role as the ever-cheerful clown perfectly. Nicoletta Braschi isn't all that great; on the other hand, Giorgio Cantarini is fantastic as the son.
Unforgettable scenes include the explanation of the camp rules, the scene in the theater, and the scene where Guido foists a specific menu on the government official. A delightful film.

All in all, I thought it was a pretty fun movie, although it was a bit too long for my liking and some parts in the camp were quite unbelievable (like when Guido breaks into the women's quarters, for example, or how Giosué stays hidden for so long), but I suppose those things are necessary for the story. If you don't pay attention to them, you see an entertaining story about how optimism keeps you going in times of misery. I'm not really looking for much depth; in a more successful life, this would just be a casual movie to hang out with my sexy girlfriend (though lacking one, I had to watch it alone).
I saw the film in Italian, but I thought there was an English version too...? That seems like a letdown to me, because without the Italian atmosphere (for which I find the language necessary) it has a lot less charisma.
Kudos also to Giorgio Cantarini, who is a '92 native just like me; it probably wasn't easy for him to pretend he had to play a game
