Some are fleeing war or persecution. Others know the Geneva Convention very well and still others, like these two here, have no idea what is possible in Europe. They have no chance of obtaining residence rights in Europe. But that's not what this film is about.
The film is about their dangerous trip to Europe, which is often accompanied by many obstacles and delays. Anyone who thought that the sea is the biggest obstacle will find in this film that the journey overland is also fraught with many issues.
It is of course distressing how criminals, human smugglers and corrupt officials exploit emigrants. Some scenes are harsh, such as those in the desert or with that warlord. But the film also contains positive elements surrounding self-sacrifice, perseverance and friendship.
Technically also a good film. Good acting and a well developed plot. Fascinating images also of Dakar, the Sahara and the other cities along their path.

Not at all. A heavy drama that is true for many refugees without you really feeling what is happening to them. There are quite hard moments in it (people falling off the jeep, getting exhausted in the desert, those tortures) but they hang in there a bit and because this film is such a road movie, as a viewer I left them as well. quickly behind. The ending is also a bit lazy, presented as a piece of hope, but the misery continues if one is not already sent back. Visually not very special, apart from a single shot in the barren desert. Reasonably acted but more of a road movie than a coming of age and the film didn't really work for me in that respect either. And besides, there is little new in it. I felt like I'd seen this all before. I thought a film like La Jaula de Oro (Film, 2013) about the same theme was clearly better (and which also ends much better). 2.5*.

After months of preparation, Seydou [Seydou Sarr] and Moussa [Moustapha Fall] think they have collected enough money and resources to travel to Europe. There they can earn enough money to provide for their family. The first part of the journey should take them to Tripoli, but ends up stranded in a place just far enough to make return impossible. Guided by glimmers of hope, usually fueled by the profiteers they encounter along the way, they keep moving one step further. Impressive reconstruction of a journey that hundreds of thousands of Africans had to make. Garrone and cinematographer Paolo Carnera enhance the feeling that you are watching a documentary and Sarr is phenomenal in the lead role. The final scene is especially unforgettable.
