Emily Brontë's literary masterpiece about unbridled passion has been reduced by Fennell (who also wrote the dreadful screenplay) to a panting sex drama with a dose of S&M. The sets, makeup, and costumes are excellent, and the beautiful images evoke something of the oppressive atmosphere of the book, but the dialogue is banal (count how many times the words "I love you" appear). Robbie is too vulgar as Cathy, Elordi as Heathcliff is downright banal with his long mane and chest hair reminiscent of late-70s softcore porn. Alison Oliver's performance as Isabella Linton is demeaning in every way.

A film with very mixed reviews, and rightly so. It also demonstrates that many people still read and know this 19th-century book. Most criticism focuses on its comparison to the book. On Letterboxd, you'll find a list of around 37 film adaptations over the years, not to mention the many free interpretations or influences on series, music videos, and more.

The film also deviates from the book, both in terms of story and character development. Those less familiar with the book or who didn't like it might find this more appealing. It's a difficult book to adapt into a film anyway. Admittedly, the book still seems better known and better than those 37 film adaptations. I only remember the 1939 one. And staying true to the book doesn't guarantee a good film, of course.

Visually, the film is breathtaking and reminds me of the (arguably better) Hamnet. The music is fitting, too. Film-wise, this is a delight, especially on a big screen (where films belong). Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi may not be the best actors for the two leads, but they do a decent job in the version Emerald Fennell envisioned. The criticism that the classic has been transformed into an erotic tale is completely off the mark. Or people have become a lot more prudish.

This film adaptation of Wuthering Heights may not have been the best adaptation of a book, but as a film, it's more than just another one in the list that will likely be forgotten next month. The fact that the reviews are so divided, in my opinion, demonstrates that the film stands out more than its many predecessors, and even better: that the book remains as popular as ever. While this may deviate from Emily Bronte's story, I feel the essence has been preserved. And this has become more of a beautiful interpretation than a correct adaptation of the book.

An excellent film about the destructive love affair of a man and a woman growing up together. Not your typical costume drama, as you might expect (based on the source material). It's somewhat grotesque in tone, and the set design and music are also somewhat unusual. It all looks beautiful, and the second half is the strongest. A mere 4.0 stars.
