Fantasy Island opens with a blond lady being chased on the island in panic by masked men. This generic opening scene was probably tucked in just to give the viewers some action, because then it's going to be a long wait before something happens again in Fantasy Island. The first 45 minutes are devoted to five extremely interchangeable and boring characters who embark on their remarkably dull - and unimaginative - fantasies. There is no tension and sensation. To give us the feeling that there is indeed a threat lurking, Wadlow shows some dripping black goo at the beginning of each fantasy. Pooh, scary!

But even when director Wadlow eventually kicks the film into high gear, it all remains ridiculously tame. Gore is nowhere to be found - because PG-13 - and Fantasy Island never gets scary at all. There is hardly any horror in this horror film at all. But Wadlow also fails miserably in other genres. The film is not funny or sharp and the action - on which the second act mainly relies - is only mediocre. And for the climax, Wadlow mainly has drama in mind. Each character is given a dramatic scene where the film comes to a complete stop and the violin music volume knob is turned upside down. And not only the guests, the mysterious Mr. Roarke is also dragged in for some tear-jerking. The fact that Michael Peña plays this mystical host throughout the movie as a sleepwalking guy doesn't help either; it makes Mr. Roarke look as dull as any of the other characters. And well, if even Michael Rooker in your film is just a dull appearance, then you know you're doing something seriously wrong.

Terrible movie. The worst movie I've seen so far this year. What a stupid story with a super bad screenplay. I like a bit of 'fantasy' and supernatural 'hassle'. But this really isn't my thing. The actors are not to like and the ending is really really annoying. What a waste of my time. Really don't watch this, because you really get to see a dragon of a movie. Only plus is the movie poster. It's even scarier and more exciting than the entire movie put together.
