Bob Marley: One Love plot

"First he changed music, then he changed the world."

Biographical film that follows the life of the most famous reggae artist from his early steps towards world fame to his untimely death in the early 1980s, guided by concerts in his native Jamaica and beyond, studio recordings and encounters with big stars like Mick Jagger. The content of Jamaican rasta music often spoke of living peacefully and quietly, with love for everyone; it appealed to people of all generations around the world. He also expressed this attitude in his life, in which he had to deal with many setbacks, such as dealing with the political unrest in Jamaica and attacks on his life and that of his family by rebels, which he answered by giving peace concerts.

A Hollywood biography. Beautifully depicted and the singing and acting performances were fine, but it lacks depth. The film was tied together with popular quotes, and afterwards you don't know who Bob Marley really is. His childhood was barely reflected in the film, and it is clear that his family had a major influence on the storyline. Too bad, a missed opportunity.

Bob Marley's family was closely involved in the making of this biopic - son Ziggy was present on the set as an executive producer - but fortunately this did not become a one-dimensional canonization. Begins in the run-up to the 1976 Smile Jamaica Concert, when Bob Marley is injured in an attempt on his life. Three days later he is on stage, but not much later he decides to travel to London. Partly for safety reasons, he also hopes to give his musical career a new boost there. The result is the album 'Exodus', a critically acclaimed masterpiece with classics such as 'Three Little Birds', 'Jammin'' and the title track. Ben-Adir impressively portrays the many facets of Marley, but unfortunately the screenplay is quite episodic, meaning there is little dramatic build-up. In any case, the music is still rock solid.

The difficult approach to a biopic, because you still want to tell the real story, but at the same time focus on the more beautiful side of someone who has died. Bob Marley: One Love clearly comes from Hollywood and also has the family behind the scenes that keeps an eye on everything. What sometimes seems brushed off also ensures that the film has a heart. And Bob Marley's story is different from most rise & fall films by other artists.

We mainly see the musician Bob Marley and his belief in Rastafari. For him it was also one whole. And it gives a little more meaning to the well-known songs. For me it could have been a bit rawer to really be a strong film. But this is a must, especially for music lovers. And Marley definitely deserves a movie about him. Who knows, maybe he will be (re)discovered by a new generation, more than 40 years after his death.
