Paul Thomas Anderson did it again! 4 years after Phantom Thread he makes another great movie. And yet it has become something completely different. A romantic and playful film, set in the 1970s. The 2 main characters are new faces, although music lovers may recognize Alana Haim (and her sisters in the film) from their band Haim. She clearly shows that she can also act great. Cooper Hoffman (son of the legendary Philip Seymour Hoffman) is her opponent with a character based on actor and producer Gary Goetzman, who was later responsible as producer for films such as Silence of the Lambs, Mamma Mia and Where the Wild Things Are. Although that is more of a fun fact than relevant in this film.

The combination of Paul Thomas Anderson as director and writer of the film with the very fine cast makes for a very playful film that lets the viewer enjoy the full 2 hours of attention. The chemistry between Alana and Gary in the film works, there is plenty to see, many colorful fringe figures that further dress the whole thing up and you leave with a warm feeling.

PTA is back where it needs to be: California, and especially the San Fernando Valley. Nice of him to take a trip to London with Phantom Thread, but this is his place. Where that - by the way good - movie Phantom Thread is a bit cold and clinical, this Licorice Pizza is a divine warm bath. Truly the sweetest, most beautiful, warmest, finest film I've seen in years.

Just that stunning opening, with a gently floating camera, the warmth of the Californian summer palpable through the white screen and a beautiful dialogue between the two protagonists. So pure, so natural, so tender, so sweet. And so the film goes on, from episode to episode, but that's what this film is about and then it works. Not every scene is great (that part with Sean Penn and Tom Waits was mediocre and lasted too long) but there is so much beauty in it. Sometimes scenes that come out of nowhere and add nothing at all, but that's the point of the movie. This is a slice of life where not everything makes sense or has a finished story (the film reminded me a bit of Tarantino's last offspring in terms of structure). This whole movie is an ode to life. Aided by two uninhibited protagonists with a great mutual chemistry, full of fun ideas, beautiful camera work, visual play and a nice soundtrack.

The film is above all a nice film to watch. This film isn't as disruptive as previous PTA films (and therefore lacks that little bit extra), but someone has to be in good hands to surpass this film this year. 4.5* and give the best man an Oscar.

If you read through the reactions, you mainly see two points of view: one is that Licorice Pizza gives a good impression of the 1970s (positive reviews), the other that the film has too little story (negative reviews ).

I came across two users who get something different (more, if you will). mrklm names the line of 'sexualization and marginalization' of Alana. Indeed, from the striking and emphasized moment of the blow to the buttock. mezzanine mainly observes the interplay between the dreams, playfulness and naivety of youth (Gary) and the doubt, responsibility and understanding of consequences of the young adult (Alana). Indeed, it can be clearly seen in the reaction to the ride with the petrol-free truck!

For example, the criticism that the story is 'paper thin' appears to be unjustified. The events are not tied together one on one, as for example in a mafia movie where one murder after another may happen. But that does not mean that such a film has a better story, on the contrary.

I recently revised Magnolia (brilliant!) and Licorice Pizza definitely doesn't come close to that level. Nevertheless, a beautiful and valuable film. And as mentioned by the others: the casting of Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman is gold and bears witness to an idiosyncratic vision and love for cinema.
