“Girlie, tough ain't enough.”

The first time I saw Million Dollar Baby (Camera cinema in Utrecht) was a crushing movie experience. The film hit like a sledgehammer and I remember walking around with the film in my head for days. Now that is of course a lot less, but the film still makes a great impression. In the beginning, the film flows slowly and the characters are introduced in a nice way. Frankie, Maggie and Eddie are all three scratched individuals and Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman and Hilary Swank are fabulous.

Due to the strong characters, the interesting theme (old female boxer who is discovered (too) late) and of course the voice-over by Freeman, the slow tempo never feels viscous and I was and still am captivated. The film has a number of themes such as adversity, perseverance, personal suffering, compassion, humanity and friendship and makes an impressive cocktail of it. About half way through the film, the film delivers a knockout that lingers for a long time, but after that the film retains its own identity and a film about boxing and overcoming obstacles, flows effortlessly into a film about dignity and the meaning of living in a hopeless situation. Very handsome of the old master Eastwood. And of course from Swank who is heartbreakingly good. Million Dollar Baby is a “One in a Million” movie. An intimate masterpiece.

Million Dollar Baby is one of the stronger boxing movies I've seen. It is a film that radiates simplicity and quality thanks to Eastwood's tight direction. MDB actually revolves around three main characters. On the one hand you have Scrap (played by the wonderful Morgan freeman and what a great voice-over that man has). Scrap, an ex-boxer who for centuries has been the caretaker and mainstay of the gruff Frankie Dunn who can get the best out of a boxer, but at the same time is insecure to take risks. Hillary Swank and Eastwood star in this drama film. Seven nominations for the Oscars, 4 of which were cashed, strong! And completely deserved, especially when you see the other nominees!

MDB makes for some excellent fights, but it's mostly the work outside the ring that sparks. Maggie wants to fight her way out of desperate poverty by letting Dunn train her with her stubborn determination and assertiveness. Dunn, on the other hand, is initially adamant, but sees similarities with his daughter that he no longer sees. He becomes a kind of father figure to her and will not leave her side later after the accident. Very nicely developed and also not too melodramatic. No happy ending show here, not even a cliché boxing film where a newbie wins the world title, no, pure raw realism.

It's a film that touched me and surprised me at the same time, because I didn't see this in Eastwood. The excellent casting, directing and acting performances are the great strength of the film. I heard that Mystic river is also a must see. It will also be reviewed shortly. Well worth 4.0* this MDB!

Beautiful film again from Eastwood in which the heartwarming family dynamic between Frankie, Maggie and Scrap is the strongest element. The raw realism is also present again, an aspect of Eastwood films that I really appreciate. I think the film is slightly less than Gran Torino and also Richard Jewell, mainly because the ending is a bit too slow for me. But that's a knee-jerk comment from an Eastwood lover (as a director) who is therefore also critical. So just a good movie!

A film that has won 4 Oscars and more than 150 nominations or other film awards. In this movie, Clint Eastwood once again shows his ability and love for cinema in the best way. Many fans and experts consider this movie to be his best movie. The film is excellent in directing, especially the use of light in the film is done in the best way. Therefore, filming is also exemplary. The film won 4 Oscars for Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor. The film has no expiration date and remains in the historical memory of cinema lovers. A strong drama far from any clichés that prompts the audience to think about the meaning of life. Life is a combination of defeats and victories. It is a mixture of bitterness and sweetness, but it is the result of a person's efforts and fighting to achieve his dreams. Death is not an important thing and all people die in their daily life. In this inner struggle, he goes somewhere in the middle of nowhere in order to win this fight. In the final scenes in the hospital, where Frankie disconnects the air tube from Maggie, the bright shadows of Frankie and Maggie's faces remain and will remain in the mind. In the end, it should be said that Hilary Swank's stunning performance was reminiscent of "Boys Don't Cry" and she should be praised. Morgan Freeman is amazing and deservedly deserved an Oscar for this movie
