Beautiful film with a very impressive first hour, and then enough depth and sharpness to remain fascinating, with the only downside being the role of John Goodman that doesn't match the tone of the film. Some people here find the ending a bit too sweet, but that would only really have been the case for me if Whip had escaped the (prison) dance and then started to improve on his own strength (to then have a good open the door tomorrow and see Nicole standing on the doorstep). No, I thought it was a nice ending, with the striking statement "It was as if I had reached my lifelong limit of lies", I can imagine that. And Denzel Washington was perfect again.

“You're a hero, man! You will never pay for a drink for as long as you live.”

Strong movie. Especially the storyline with Denzel Washington is very well developed, and the scenes in the beginning in the cockpit are exciting and wonderfully filmed. The way in which Whip's alcoholism and guilt are dealt with afterwards is also very strong, and the over-sentimental sentiment is thankfully absent. The other storyline around Kelly Reilly was less well developed, but it fits the film and Reilly is fantastic in a difficult role. Flight is all in all an impressive film about a personal drama with major consequences.

Pilot Whip Whitakers [Denzel Washington] Drinking and drug use is an open secret among his crew members, but can no longer be hidden when his plane crashes. While there is praise for the fact that Whip's experience and instincts saved the lives of 96 of the 102 passengers and crew, the Public Prosecution Service is investigating him for negligence. With the help of his supervisor [Bruce Greenwood] and a cunning lawyer [Don Cheadle], he seems to escape unscathed, but confrontations with colleagues on board confront Whip with the consequences of his reckless behavior. Just like in Cast Away, Zemeckis opens with a chilling reconstruction of a plane crash and manages to get a top performance out of the protagonist. Washington deservedly won several awards for his role (the Oscar that year went to Daniel Day-Lewis), but the other roles are less well developed and Goodman's contribution as Whip's friend and dealer is useless.
