Detective Keith Frazier (Denzel Washington) and his partner are confronted with a bank robbery that creates a large-scale hostage situation. Frazier must face off against super-intelligent criminal Dalton Russell (Clive Owen) who has devised the perfect bank robbery. Negotiations are difficult and complicated by the presence of Madeleine White (Jodie Foster), a stockbroker with important connections.

Good.
This film should really only do one thing, and it does. As simple as it may seem on paper, it's what sets this movie apart from 100 similar heist movies: making the perfect plan perfect. No bullshit with plans that go wrong to make it exciting, no nonsense where the perpetrators are arrested afterwards ... well, it just works as it should. Also why I appreciate the Oceans films.
Denzel is above all the caricature he has been for several years. Charismatic hero who gets a big case attributed from an underdog role. Owen is a worthy opponent, only Foster is a bit out of tune. Continue to consider her a limited actress.
Spike also makes it a stylish and colorful event. Funny characters, smooth direction, the occasional stylish experiment and a warm, smooth soundtrack that fits the characters perfectly.
The film doesn't want to be really great anywhere, but the level never drops, it remains fun until the end and that's a lot for a 130 minute heist film. One of Lee's better films, quite a nice director to catch a movie from now and then.

Saw it in the cinema at the time. A bit disappointing when reviewing. The soundtrack is way too thick on top of it. Also, the plot has little more to offer than the point that Dalton just hides well and later walks out without any problems. The whole thing with Case and White doesn't really matter but is necessary to complete the two hours and to give the whole the feeling of an intelligent thriller. However, the soundtrack mentioned already reveals that it is nothing more than an entertaining action movie. Nevertheless, we did enjoy ourselves. There is nothing wrong with acting (not brilliant either) and such a hostage situation just remains interesting. So just enough.
