Robbed of all his possessions, Max (Gibson) barely manages to reach the town of Bartertown, run by Aunt Entity (Turner). He makes a deal with Entity and fights on her behalf in the Thunderdome, a cage where fights are held to the death. Entity tricks him and throws him into the desert. With the help of a group of children he finds at an oasis, Max returns to Bartertown to deal with Entity.

I was aware that Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome had a lesser reputation than its predecessors, but I didn't know why. Now it is. This is a big middle finger to the first two parts!

How did it get this far? The striking thing is that the first half hour is still quite good. The campy atmosphere was initially a bit against me in the series, but after three parts I'm used to it and adjusted to it. That's why I couldn't have a problem with Tina Turner. It plays larger-than-life, but it fits the whole atmosphere. The plot was largely obtuse and poorly executed (the simplicity of the earlier two parts works better for Miller), but the combat in the Thunderdome was good.

What happens next, however, is unimaginable. The whole thing turns into an irritating children's film with a good moral. What is striking is that the story immediately becomes a lot tamer. There are hardly any deaths (three only if I'm right, only one villain), instead we have children who cutely push villains over. The Mad Max series, which was previously known for its tough approach, has turned into a sweet fairy tale for the little ones.

At the end there is a chase as we are used to. It is strongly reminiscent of the big fight in The Road Warrior, but now without the violence. It is still well filmed, but this time there is no tension or urgency. In part 2 it was really hit or miss, here it is mostly just between two or three vehicles. The rest drive around it a bit, just for show.

Really, the first half hour is the only reason I'm not handing out half a star. I'm not even a big fan of the predecessors, but with part 3 I got bored and annoyed. Rarely seen a series lose its way like that. Fortunately it was not the end of the series and the damage was repaired.

What a terrible part this is, compared to the other parts.

There is very little action in this. The movie gets very boring and childish when Mel Gibson ends up with the kids.

Tina Turner plays her part well. She's really into it. You see. That makes it a bit more pleasant.

Unfortunately nothing happened for a very long time. And then at the end some old-fashioned Mad Max action kicks in.

But it can't match part 2 and/or 4 in the series.

A film with two faces. The first part in Bartertown is fantastic. Nice sets, campy acting, nice characters, humor and good action. I even leaned towards the maximum score, that's how good I liked this first part.

Unfortunately there is the second part, in which Max has to save a tribe as a kind of savior. All those kids and the happy adventure music make the movie completely change its tone, and certainly not for the better.
The slot with the chase on the rails is oldschool Mad Max and enjoy it again, so still a positive endnote.

It's that I found the first half so enjoyable, otherwise a maximum of 1.5*. But yes, the good opening pulls the score to a tight pass. And I have a weakness for deserts and post-apocalyptic worlds, and this film offers that again in an original way. Adequate, but cramped.

3*
