Die Hard plot

"Twelve terrorists. One cop. The odds are against John McClane... That's just the way he likes it."

The only reason New York cop John McClane (Bruce Willis) is in Los Angeles is because he wants to be with his kids over Christmas. He finds himself at a party at his estranged wife's work when German terrorists led by the ruthless Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) take control of the skyscraper to open a safe with seven locks. Because of his concealed position, he manages to avoid the group of hostages in order to eliminate the terrorists and sabotage their plan.

Blueprint.

Very fine action film where so many others have made it, that it can rightly be called a blueprint for many formula works and imitators.

Much has already been said about it, but I would like to emphasize the charismatic Rickman and the perfect use of the location in particular. I also noticed that Willis in 1988 really has a much more animated style of acting, if you compare it with much later roles. The autopilot is not there yet.

Music, action, plot, characters and the sarcastic character throughout the humor; in 2019 it still feels reasonably fresh and of enough level to consider that this must have been really great 30 years ago. Half extra: 4*

Please guys, all 4.5-5 star ratings? I only liked it half way through. Throughout the film there are many unrealistic moments that start to irritate. Alan Rickman plays nice (especially the ending scene) but has no German accent at all. I thought the Beethoven soundtrack was well done. The action and special effects of the film are also impressive. Nevertheless, I think Die hard (1988) is not much better than Under Siege (1992).

Revised after many years, Die Hard simply remains the ultimate action movie. Bruce Willis as McClane still remains cool, witty and energetic after all this time, but what struck me even more than before on this viewing is how incredibly well put together and memorable the rest of the characters are. And that with minimal introduction and background information, because the film does not contain an ounce of fat (despite a long running time). From the taxi driver and Reginald VelJohnson as a street cop to the iconic and super cool Hans Gruber and his cronies; Die Hard is also packed with colorful figures next to Willis. Alan Rickman certainly puts down one of the best villains in the action genre, rarely if ever surpassed. The setting of the skyscraper is fantastic, and the claustrophobic aspect is often enough in the film. The iconic quotes, the tight script, the great and frequently portrayed action scenes; Die Hard just gets the most out of the concept, without ever becoming cluttered or chaotic. So it remains, for me too, one of the most entertaining but above all tightest action films ever made, and the atmospheric Christmas setting is only an extra bonus. 4.5* stood and remain standing.
