“Damn McClane, you know I was just starting to like you.”

“Yeah, well don't, I'm an asshole.”

Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson bickering through the streets of New York defusing bombs and a glamorous Jeremy Irons as the bad guy, what's not to like? Die Hard: With a Vengeance starts off explosively and in the first part a wonderfully chilling atmosphere is created with John McClane walking around with a bad hangover who has to fulfill all the assignments that the mysterious Simon tells him, or else more bombs will go off.

While fulfilling these assignments, McClane gets help from Zeus (Jackson) and Willis and Jackson make a very entertaining duo. The first part is mysterious and ominous because you don't know who this Simon is and why he's after McClane. As soon as Irons appears on screen and his real plan is revealed, the film turns into an action-packed spectacle with the well-known cat and mouse game. Willis gets to put his white shirt back on and spout cool one-liners and it's great to watch again. Director John McTiernan captures the summery New York perfectly and the city is almost a character in itself. The Die Hard series remains an example for other action films and shows how it should be done. Lots of action, highly developed characters, humor, cool one-liners and a colorful bad guy. Sometimes no more is needed.

The third part is also good. In terms of pure fight scenes, this time it is clearly less than the previous 2 parts. There are now even more MacGyver-like situations than in the previous parts I thought. Samuel Jackson and Bruce Willis play well together and there are some decent jokes in the film. In terms of humor this Die Hard scores slightly better than their 2 predecessors in my opinion. The assignments are entertaining in themselves, but of course it always has to happen at the last second that they find the answer or that they cut the right thread of the 'lemonade bomb'. I find that disturbing and unbelievable. Plus, it's a bit of a shame that the actress who plays Holly isn't featured here, written out of the story a bit too easily...

How an action movie should be, strong story, good action and the chemistry between Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson complete this movie.
