Truly genius. Astute, until the pants tore at the buttocks, but I laughed my ass off. Takes a while to get going, but easily reaches the level of tear-in movies like Airplane! and The Naked Gun, from the same joke and prank trio Zucker, Abrams, Zucker. Jewish humor at its best. Let's say a combination of slapstick, oblique nonsense (that tape measure, masterful), language jokes and parody (Blue Lagoon and many WW2 films suffer here, just like the disaster films in Airplane). With a starring role for the singing, dancing Val Kilmer as a kind of Elvis (who was deliberately bad acting by the director because Elvis didn't do much of that either).

Really haven't laughed so much in ages. Of course the story makes no sense, because it is a completely crazy film. The jokes follow each other in rapid succession and the playing time is nice and short.

Now Jane Austen's Mafia! and I've seen all these fun pants.

Haha what a great nonsense movie! Made me laugh out loud at times. bit of a shame that I only found out after 37 years that this film existed. Really enjoyed it on the Friday night. 3.5 stars.

German teaching tape: Die Sauerkraut ist in mein Lederhosen.
A movie by Jim Abrahams, Jerry Zucker and David Zucker. That means humor à la Airplane! (1980) and The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988). That means that movies are parodied. That means bland, sharp and absurd humor. That means having a good laugh
Indeed, Top Secret offers it all. And there is more. The film is especially notable for its optical humor. Again and again the film plays with the viewer's perspective. A phone ringing in the foreground doesn't get smaller when someone approaches from the background and picks up the handset. It remains a huge thing. An eye remains the same size when the magnifying glass that enlarges the eye is put away. A station moves away from a train instead of the other way around. Is that fun? Yes, that's to squeal.
As in almost all films of the makers, the story does not matter. The film consists of bizarre and hilarious scenes that are placed in a logical order and thus create a story. You could fall in the middle of the movie without any knowledge of the story and still be screaming with laughter. The scenes more or less stand on their own.
The scene with Peter Cushing is beautiful. Recorded in one take and played backwards. Well played by the actors and the effect is very funny. It's a beautiful scene, but not the best. The best scene for me is a scene with a singing horse. I played that scene a few times and even after the thirtieth time I had to laugh about it again.
Top Secret is a delightful comedy.
