Splendid!

To appreciate this film you have to be able to put yourself in the world of Ingemar, don't think too much but just let your feelings speak. For me, that world of Ingemar and his peers is so recognizable that I would long to return. I also clearly recognized the fifties in this atmospheric nostalgic film.

I can't really say more about this wonderful film, except that I bought this gem by Lasse Hallström for only € 2.50 on the DVD market. Not everyone seems to like this video. I certainly do because this film gets the highest rating from me.

Had this on the shelf for years. But what a lovable film this is.

Now I already knew that the best youth films are made in Sweden... Just like in the Netherlands, despite the many crap productions here.

The story takes place in a Swedish village in the 1950s... I was immediately absorbed by the atmosphere. We follow outsider Ingemar who lives with his single mother with his brother. This mother suffers from sudden outbursts of anger and is stricken with an illness. However, this sometimes results in comic images instead of sad ones. In addition, Ingemar's dog is his best friend, but that changes when he has to go elsewhere at the doctor's request, to spare his mother's suffering. He ends up with his uncle and what happened to his dog is not taken into account. What do we get then? Not really a concrete story, but a very fine collection of observations and moments in childhood. The football matches, Ingemar's boxing boyfriend, his crazy but rebellious uncle, that one old-fashioned tune on the gramophone record, a sensual lady, a perverted artist, quarrels, girls, playing with friends, a bored roofer, the first television and of course the scenes with Saga.... in short, just something that is a children's film, which also manages to touch the adult hearts.

And the film is not melancholic, but just adventurous, light-hearted and cheerful and encompasses a wide range of creativity. However, that part where Ingemar starts barking to soften the loss of his dog, and the eventual death of his mother was very strong.

Yes, this really was a gem of a youth film, and also completely as you can expect from the Swedish angle. I am willing to spontaneously look for more such titles.

Lasse Hallström mainly makes films that combine lightheartedness with tragedy. This is no different with the film adaptation of Reidar Jönsson's semi-autobiographical novel Mitt liv som hund. The coming of age story about Ingemar, a boy who is forced to live with family in another part of Sweden, is on the one hand very entertaining and wonderfully nostalgic and on the other hand touches serious themes such as death, mourning and socially inappropriate behavior. .

Ingemar is a type of character who is also recognizable in Hallström's later work. Take, for example, the young lead roles in What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) or in The Cider House Rules (1999) which are of a similarly ambivalent caliber. Misfits who have trouble functioning normally. Characters with a hard shell and a turbulent emotional life. No matter how hard disaster strikes in Ingemar's life, he always keeps in mind that there is always someone with an even heavier and more hopeless fate. Such as the Russian dog Laika, who was launched into space and became the first living creature to circle the earth with no hope of returning.

Ingemar accepts his role as a dog and plays his part with verve to the great ignorance of his surroundings, who refer to him as mentally confused or as socially maladjusted. In addition to zooming in on Ingemar and the entertaining adventures he experiences, the film pays a lot of attention to life in the Swedish countryside and its remarkable inhabitants. The camera produces images of postcard-like allure that evoke a nostalgic feeling.

And so My Life as a Dog is a film that is pleasantly amusing and that allows itself to deposit a certain degree of tragedy and melancholy under the pleasant innocence that Ingemar's experiences mainly radiate.
