Could have just been a western (classic). Remarkably many themes that match. The area is remote and rich in nature, the struggle with nature and jealous fellow humans, the search for water and the brackish, old houses as icing on the cake. Or is the cherry perhaps the sad melody on the harmonica? Ennio Morricone probably would have liked the tune on his credit. I especially enjoyed Jean's fight for a new life. His perseverance and optimism. The way in which he is finally betrayed and how the Soubeyran's then celebrate at the reopened stream, feels strange. It's good that a movie like this triggers something in you. Although Gérard Depardieu plays a beautiful role, I enjoyed Daniel Auteuil's playing more. I'm curious how this will end. Quickly crank up Manon des Sources.

A few days ago the diptych was on TV again. It's been a long time since I saw those movies. Pagnol is also one of those authors whose works have been brilliantly filmed.

Le Papet and his cousin Ugolin are the last of a prominent local lineage and Le Papet will do anything to carry on the family name. He helps Ugolin set up a carnation farm, but for that he needs access to a lot of water: the liquid gold that can become a blessing or curse in periods of prolonged drought. Ugolin and his uncle have no source of their own on their lands and covet that of their neighbor. When the neighbor dies, the grounds pass to his cousin, Jean, a hunchback. But the two other quips brick up the well and withhold its presence from Jean. They hope that the townsman will fail to maintain the farm, but underestimate his ingenuity and courage.
The whole film actually builds up to a dramatic event, and is therefore a lot more tedious than its sequel. Because until it comes, Papet and Ugolin try to sabotage all the efforts of the naive but good-hearted Jean. Very strong atmosphere of Provence : the lavender and the herbs penetrate your nostrils, the crickets do the rest.

I saw this movie a long time ago. So long ago that I hadn't even written anything about it here. So that's pretty long. But I still remembered a lot about it. The film made quite an impression at the time. And even now I still thought it was a good movie. He is very slow, but he builds up very nicely and the acting is good. It's also quite a gripping story. On to part 2 with Manon. I remember a lot about that too. I watched it pretty soon after this one too. And that's what I'm planning to do now.
