The second part of this naturalistic diptych is not inferior to the first. Emmanuelle Béart plays a role with relatively few words, but with all the more expressiveness in her facial expression. One minute she has the look of an innocent shepherdess, then she's answering Ugolin's voyeuristic look with the evil eye. The tune she plays on her accordion, the same as her father used to do, betrays her inner drive.

The story is similar to a Greek tragedy. César Soubeyran's fate is brought about, partly by chance of the missing letter, partly by his own actions. His hopes for a male heir who bears his family name is lost with Ugolin's suicide, a fatal turning point. A blind visionary explains everything, with Jean's hunchback as a recognition element.

Religion and superstition played an important role in such a French village at that time. Whoever wants to believe in a supernatural explanation can remain blind to the truth. Until César, that truth finally gets through. He has evolved from a mischievous and greedy manipulator to a disenchanted and repentant old man.

The Provencal nature is again overwhelming, with the poppy red as a symbol of passion. The well in the cave symbolizes fertility and the unattainable feminine.
