Un Long Dimanche de Fiançailles plot

"Never let go."

During the First World War, five men in the Somme are ordered to move to the first line of fire. A court martial has decided to punish them and leave them in this desolate region, so that they will be killed in battle. It is there that they die. Only a young crippled woman who was engaged to one of the missing men receives information that leads her to believe that he survived. She then decides to embark on a long, difficult and often frustrating quest to discover the truth.

Even with this film, Jeunet doesn't captivate me much. The story is presented too complex, it is long-winded and quite distant, which leaves me completely cold. I already found that in Amelie. The quest goes on and on and on and on and on and on and on in a way to end disappointingly. He doesn't remember her but then basically says the exact same thing as they did on their first(?) meeting. I thought it was a bit like Elle S'appelait Sarah in a way from the research. Although I like the film a lot better so further comparison is pointless.

It is by no means exciting, nor is it possible if you tell your story with voice-overs. Yet these kinds of films often score remarkably high, while this one is also no more than entertaining. The color filter is a bit of a miss in my opinion, a bit too yellow. It does give the film warmth in itself, but Tautou never manages to convey that fervor. What a lax actress she is, her facial expression is always the same. Nice ass maybe but if that's all she can offer in 2 hours, I don't need it. In Amélie she doesn't give a shit because of the introversion she has to show, but here she certainly does. The war scenes nevertheless look very professional and the soldiers are all neatly dressed.
