"Uncover the mystery."

In 2002, an American expat journalist, Julia, is working on a piece about the Vel d'Hiv (a sports stadium where thousands of Jews, especially children, were deported in Paris on 16 July 1942). She discovers that a long-kept secret links the fate of her in-laws to the fate of a Jewish family. Obsessed with this connection, she sets out to find out what happened to the Jewish family. Especially with Sarah, who is 10 years old when her family is deported.

hmm.

It is an important story, a story that should not be forgotten, and a black page in the history of mankind that should never be repeated. Certainly in France a somewhat forgotten history I believe - it seems as if that would rather be suppressed, and certainly the role that the French and their government played in it. And when I think back for a moment to the time I was looking for the monument of the transport camp there in Pithiviers, it is best to remember that every now and then.

But does that make it a very special and very good film? I can't really get excited about it yet, I see a very predictable and very romanticized and sentimental story in it - tear-jerking even. Yes, well played and yes, beautifully portrayed. A bit too much hassle with the flashback construction, and actually a bit on the cheap side with very few 'real' historical locations being used. No wonder, because the Vel d'Hiv has long since been demolished, just like many other buildings that have had a less beautiful history at this time. Precisely for that reason, perhaps, that which strikes me as missing. And perhaps that would also have made the link of places and events a bit harder than it seems now. But perhaps that is subtly different for French people who work at the Ministry of the Interior.

Elle S'appelait Sarah

With Elle S'appelait Sarah, another impressive World War II film can be added to an already impressive list. I've read the book, and the part with Sarah is also the strongest in the movie. Logical of course, because the story about the deportation of French Jews does not leave you in the cold. It hurts, and the scenes in the present tense show that the horrors of World War II can still be felt today, and have consequences. For people who experienced the Second World War, victims, but also for family members.
