La Rafle plot

"An incredible real story of courage and survival."

The film is about one of the greatest French holocaust tragedies. On the night of July 16, 1942, the French police, 9,000 strong, staged a raid in which 13,000 Jews, mainly the elderly, women and children, were rounded up. Most of them were held in the Vélodrome d'Hiver sports stadium in Paris; many were sent to Auschwitz. The operation was ordered by the Vichy regime. We follow this tragedy through the eyes of 10-year-old Jo Weismann.

Reasonable film in which the French police arrest thousands of Jews during the start of the Second World War. A terrible piece of history poignantly portrayed, but not entirely without melodrama. The film lacks some focus, especially in the beginning and the scenes with Hitler are almost caricatured.

A story that should be told more so that it may never be forgotten. The film shows nicely that not only the Germans were carried away with Nazism, or acted or bled their noses..., but that all over Europe there were people who only thought of themselves and followed the German regime. Or abused it to develop their own power with the support of the Nazis. Much of the French police were quite ecstatic when they were ordered from Berlin to round up all the Jews. Something where President Chirac officially apologized to the Jewish population in 1995.

The film builds up with some Jewish families. They sometimes already feel the tension in the air, although hardly anyone is really prepared for what is to come. The raid when they arrest the Jews is impressively portrayed. Same when the next step comes and people have to leave the camps by train.

Still, there are a few flaws in this movie. The scenes with Hitler seem like parody. At first I thought it was a joke of the Jews who secretly laughed at that terrible man. The tone is also sometimes a bit too light-hearted and, as is often the case in the film world, the scenes with the children were not always as strong. The nurse was also sometimes a little bit about it. But it does give a good look at the events. La Rafle is sometimes too obedient for this theme, but does show the facts clearly and especially the emphasis on the children and the cold behavior of both the Germans and the French collaborators.

Film about the persecution of the Jews in Paris during the Second World War. It is, of course, a terrible subject. However, the film is too straightforward for the most part. There are too many people being followed and it is all very thick on top. Then it might as well be a documentary. Towards the end, the film focuses more on the nurse and a small number of children. And then the film immediately becomes a lot more personal and emotional. And so better. Although the balance of the emotional (drawing tears) unfortunately shifts too far to the forced at the end. And so the film is not enough for me after all. I don't really understand the scenes with Hitler and de Gaulle in this film either. He is also in two minds. Does the maker want to make a documentary and give a historical picture of the raid or does the maker want to show the horrors of the persecution of the Jews? I think mainly the latter. And then you might as well leave out those historical scenes. The message is clear though.

The film's emphasis at the very beginning on the reality of all the events of the film is both its strength and its weakness. The film is based on the memories of a man who escapes from the camp as a child and survives. The subject of the film is not a new subject, but the film's look at this historical fact is the strength of the film. The film deals with children at that time. And in this sense, it is original. But the weak point of the film is that the director treats this issue emotionally and the film cannot meet the expectations due to its cinematic structure. In fact, the emotionalism of the film limits the cinematic structure, and this has made the melodrama format the best option for the film.
