Le Premier Jour du Reste de Ta Vie plot

"This family is your family"

'Le premier jour du reste de ta vie' is about five decisive days in the life of a family of five, five days that are more important than the others and where nothing will be the same the next day. Father Robert and mother Marie-Jeanne have three children: the sober and intelligent Albert, the lazy dreamer Raphaël and the rebellious teenager Fleur. From 22 years of family history, one crucial day in the life of a family member is shown.

Surprising top 250 listing.

Normally I can understand why a movie gets a high score. Some people, like me, prefer a good story, while others go more for the audiovisual aspects. Le Premier Jour du Reste de Ta Vie, however, offers neither: it's a trifle that kicks in all the open doors, while the humor stays far behind. The soundtrack is no more impressive than an average soap opera. Come on, "Such a Perfect Day" at the end? Get the impression that the film scores well mainly because it comes from France and not from Hollywood. It's not a terrible movie, but really no better than your average drama/comedy from overseas.

2.5*

After review my rating increased to 4.5*. Simple, beautiful and at times touching film about an average family, whose members take turns in the different episodes to take the lead. A great screenplay and exceptionally good acting.

A fine film that highlights a number of crucial markers in the life of a traditional family. The film alternates with humor or drama, but never comes across as forced or sentimental. A strong screenplay is interspersed with a smooth story and good acting.

The crucial moments can be predicted, but Bezancon continues to keep it interesting. Although the family has little in common with each other, often clashes, they also grow towards each other. The father of the family is a good example of this, where on the one hand he has little bond with his children (the same feeling he experiences with his own father who all too often insults him in front of the family), but at the same time the intimacy experiences with his children like his son Ralph's festival scene. The mother is in the same bed with her midlife crisis and the scene with her son who is a doctor was quite funny.

The strength of the film lies in small everyday things. The film often struck the right chord. Nice piece of cinema! Strong editing and direction, culminating in the beach scene. Thick 3.5*.
