This monumental documentary about the development of the horror film in the 1980s is a must for every horror enthusiast. David A. Weiner opts for a chronological structure whereby each episode begins with an anthology of the most popular, most influential horror films of the year in question. He then focuses on a specific development in the horror genre that has influenced cinema or culture in general. For example, attention is paid to the complex special effects of Rick Baker and Tom Savini, among others, to the unique role that women played in the genre (with meaningful contributions from Heather Langenkamp and Caroline Williams, among others) and to the influence of VHS and cable TV. . Keep a pen and paper handy to write down the titles you didn't know yet and enjoy the many film clips featuring many icons from the genre including John Carpenter, Tom Atkins, Kane Hodder and Doug Bradley. My favorite scene? Crispin Glovers dance in Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter.

At almost 4 1/2 hours, it's quite a bit of work and many of the films discussed come off a little rough, but other than that, this exploration of '80s horror film and trends is extremely entertaining and often very funny. Dozens of films are featured, from absolute rubbish to masterpieces. Of the interviews with those involved, those with Tom Atkins are my favorite. What a nice guest that is.

Very entertaining.

It's something about 80's horror: you won't find my biggest favorites in this decade, but it is undeniably filled with films that you have a soft spot for. Sometimes campy, sometimes innovative - with the necessary elaborations many franchises and formula work in general arise from this - but the entertainment factor is often there. Often with a comic slant, and certainly in the field of effects, a leap has also been made in these 10 years.

The speakers are a dozen makers who are allowed to share fragments of the leading figures of the decade. Never really critical, because horror is often a field of passionate enthusiasts. The playing time is on the long side, but for me it was perfect as, in addition to the well-known titles, it also features films that stayed under my radar. Moreover, it never feels rushed to get as much in as possible, making the whole thing an organic flow of commentary and shown fragments.

Each year we focus on a handful of titles, sometimes about the influence of the film in question, sometimes an anecdote behind the scenes. In addition, every year we also focus on a characteristic theme from the genre and which films have contributed to it. It is a consistently entertaining whole. For the enthusiast, of course, but that is probably everyone who watches this documentary.

Sometimes a bit self-aggrandizing, both per film and about the genre as a whole, but that idolization is a large part of the charm. I was able to add a few more titles to the watchlist. 3.5*
